Enraged jumbo gores villager

02 Mar 2012 - Story by Alvine Kapitako

WINDHOEK - A 49-year-old man from Okatumba village, some 21 Kilometers from Opuwo, is lucky to be alive albeit with serious injuries after an elephant gored him.

The victim, Kondjashili Nambadhi, and a companion were apparently in the bush with their dogs and nearly met their doom when suddenly elephants that were in the area descended on them on Wednesday. He was gored in the process.
According to Mbwale Ndaundu, a nurse at Opuwo hospital, Nambadhi’s companion and the dogs managed to escape unhurt.

The companion ran away when he saw the elephants, said Ndaundu but Nambadhi did not run immediately as a result of shock, the nurse explained.

One of the elephants then caught up with him, goring him, fracturing his ribs and injuring both his arms badly, said Ndaundu. Despite the injuries sustained, Nambadhi managed to escape and was rushed to Opuwo Hospital at around 14H00 and later transferred rushed to the Oshakati State Hospital.

“He is a fighter, he is even talking,” Ndaundu said about the victim.
