Have any of you seen these "Golden Wildebeest" or "King Wildebeest"? I'm assuming they are just a color mutation of Blue Wildebeest....being selectively bred in RSA or Namibia, similar to the melanistic or Black Impala.

Interesting coloration...

Have not seen one in person but have online too. I have a friend that is a game breeder in South Africa--and he has a friend that has a few. Yep it is just a color mutation of Blue Wildebeest--nothing more... thanks for sharing the pic's.

heh heh, I have a buddy who is breeding them. I was hunting a client on his ranch, and after seeing them called him to say that we had shot a weird colour wildebeest, rather than let it breed and affect more animals on the ranch. He almost had a heart attack! Wink

I've seen what was called "golden wildebeest", but they did not look - well color-wise - like those of which you have posted the photos. They were a much more uniform golden color -like the calf in one picture. That calf I'll call a "golden wildebeest", but the others? Confused

These may be called "piebald", or "skewbald" or "offbald"? [Sorry I forgot which is the proper name for those ponies colored in blotches like these wildebeest.] hilbily

Thanks for informing us Dave. Any idea of typical trophy prices?

Big money? Just wait until one of the breeders have invited one or more of the senior SCI "inner circle" guys to shoot one. Then very soon we have a new lot of listings in SCI record books: For rifle, handgun, bow, black power.... Then you'll see really big money for the breeders! stir

In good hunting.

Dave you correct its a king wildebeast not golden wildebeast two different kinds if we can call that.

Andrew yes if you can get me a king wildebeast bull for under 2.5 million rand i will take it and no i dont wanna get into a argument about colours and prices.

Andrew a golden is the same colour as that king but his whole body is that colour.Top to toe

Like it or not, these animals are turning over BIG money in short periods of time.

Kings go for +-R 2.5m
and golden for +- R 500 -R800 000
and they calf every year and you cn sell a year old calf for the same Cool

John,

Now that I've got some idea of the price of these Kings, it's a wonder your friend did not wave two heart attacks. Big Grin That was a good one, very good, but also cruel man, very cruel! hilbily

I just returned from RSA where I saw a few of each. I was told they'll run between $100,000 and $250,000 USD when they start hunting them

So is the king a reference to the social class of the intended clientele? Cuz all us regular folks are going to need a golden wildebeest to be able to afford one.

So what you're saying is that they will be known as "The Rich Man's Poor Man's Buffalo"!?

Todd,

They are worth the price, they've got unicorn genes. Eating the flesh of a Golden Gnu will grant you everlasting life along with long term virility all inclusive of the price. Wink
