Very good article in the most recent issue of the American Rifleman dealing with a young man's coming of age in Africa and the game he harvested with an iron sighted Moddel 721 Remington in 300 H&H. I suppose he was not aware that this piece was a dreaded push-feed rifle and he should never have used it to actually shoot anything. This subject has been tromped to death here several times over but I would probably think as many Mauser type extractors have been broken when jammed over a round in the chamber as jams have occurred by short stroking a push feed rifle. Personally, I have never seen either occur but that does not mean it could not happen.
Okay, let it fly. As the old Missouri trooper told the fleeing felon: "I'm too old to fight and too fat to run so I'll just have to shoot you!" (The felon stopped, post haste!}

Trapper,

Yeah, It's all just a matter of what you get used to. But don't expect me to stand shoulder to shoulder with you cause I can still run a little bit [Big Grin]

I hunted with a pair of 721's growing up one in 30 06 the other in .300 H&H magnum. I like the 721 very much the .300 was very accurate with 220 grs bullets and the 30 06 with 150 sierras. Before I left the US for Africa the ejector plunger broke exactly three days before I left the US. I took both of the rifles and traded them for a M 70 in 3006. I wore that rifle out on game. That is my only complaint about the 721, It almost ruined my start in Africa.

I have owned and shot the 721 in various calibers and they are neat old guns, my present 222 is a 722 Rem. I have used the 257 and 300 H&H...but you can bet your sweet bippy, some African kid or anyone else ain't gonna change my mind on what a DGR consist of and thats a controll feed rifle, and I've been around for a long time,n Ive seen more pushfeeds fail than controll feeds and thats good enough for me to base my wants and needs on, and my choice will always be a control feed Mauser or Win pre 64 M-70, your welcome to yours...Sometimes we have to live or die by our decisions and I want the edge.
