Ray, Once again thank you for your excellent information... R15 is the powder I have data on. I will start working some loads with IMR 4831.

Isn't the .300 RUM based on the .404? It absolutely has more case capacity than a .416. The RUM case is a few thou bigger on head diameter, in fact it is like a 348 Winchester case. Also, the shoulder on the 404 case starts much further back than the RUM cases. It also has a very long neck. Mike

Alf, Go look at what I found and a couple of others..Your wrong my friend and thats all their is too it...The 404 has a larger case capacity than the 416 Remington..I shoot both and I went out and weighed powder, and water..both Norma and RWS hold more powder and water than a Remington 416 case....I just don't know where your coming from on this, but its somewhere out in left field.

I just went down and tried IMR 4831 in an unfired Bertram .404 and RWS compared to a fired, unsized 416 rem. Filled to the neck/shoulder of the 416 Rem, dumped over into the .404 cases, it comes to about the same neck/shoulder area, but the .404 neck is MUCH longer of course. 96 grns of IMR 4831 with a 400 grn Barnes original( all I had) seated to 3.5" would be mildly compressed, seated to 3.575 would be compressed very little. This has nothing to do with pressure, only if it fits or not. Alf, I dont know if I still have your address or not, but I'd be glad to send the cases I just used for you to compare with the ones you have and see if theres any differance.

I too was under the impression the RUM was on a blown out version of the 404 Jefferys case, I know some of the Dakota are calibers are on the 404 case....

There is only ONE powder for the 404 Jefferys and that is IMR-4831, Rl-15 is a poor second choice.... Try 93 grs. with a 400 gr. bullet for 2400 plus a little...Max load is about 95 grs. in most rifles and it will clock 2652 in a 27 inch barrel, and darn near that in a 24 inch barrel. My favorite is the mild 93 gr. load and it works great on Buffalo, Lion and elephant (with a solid) A good flat nose solid is great on buffalo, or the fantastic new cup point that Northfork has been experimenting with, which is the best bullet I have ever used on Buffalo, and works great on plainsgame. The Northfork softs are the best softs along with the Woodleighs IMO...

Gentlemen.....this wouldn't be the first time one reloader was unable to attain the same results as another. My own personal experiences with wildcats and especially the AI versons are full of inconsistancies. Further I've encountered enough variance in the .404 data from different sources to know that anything goes and dead buffalo are dead buffalo regardless of the velocity with which they was hit or the propellant used to get them there. I've been reloading for 40 plus years and always appreciate the data from someone that's been there longer than my self. I still have much to learn but sometimes become disinterested in the ramblings of newcomers to the field that still think their pet loads for the .25-20 AI are equivalent to the .257 Weatherby. Actual field experience is far more interesting to me than all the numbers one can spew around Thanks again Ray for the data.....I'll be using it sometime soon.
