14000 in the support camp with 2000 elephant handlers!
Up to 600 elephants employed in the outer ring and game beaten for 40 days prior to the hunt!
Incredible! I met a chap 20 years ago who had been on an elephant tiger hunt in India in the 1930's. He had an original .416 Rigby at the time. Apparently regardless of who shot what the Maharjah "shot everything" officially!

Mehul,

I hear you loud and clear. I didn't mean to suggest that the decline in hunting in India during the twentieth century was 100% the fault of the British Raj. My point was more about the sins of the Raj than it was about the purity of the Indian sovereign, secular and socialist republic.

After all, no matter how badly the colonialists could screw up paradise, twentieth century history has amply proven that the erstwhile subjugated, but freshly freed and sometimes even ephemerallly enfranchised indigenous population usually managed to screw things up even worse. And India isn't even the worst case.

I wonder how much(sq. miles) of India was huntable back in the day compaired to the size of N. America?

It is said that at the time of independence (1947), 50% of India's land mass was forested. Today it is a mere 2%.

Let me take this opportunity to say hello to all on the African Hunting section.

I couldn't have afforded it then or now, or been of the correct social status, but they did it with class, and snappy dressers too!

And nothing to be ashamed or feel guilty about. Eat your heart out you Massachusett socialists!

Hello Rustam,

It's bloody good to see another Indian post under his own name. I only wish that more of the Indian members could do this without being worried about being targetted by PFA.

Here's to a good beginning! Welcome aboard and please do give us regular news on the hunting scene there.

Good hunting!
