it all depends on the conservancy. those with year round water will have elephants year round, although they may come and go. those with limited surface water during the dry season will start to have elephants move elsewhere by mid June. plains game is not like game ranch areas. smaller numbers, fewer species, generally harder hunting. also bear in mind that the Caprivi is hundreds of miles long( although not real wide). what holds true for the eastern side may not apply to the western side.

I have hunted the eastern Caprivi, from Salambala, south of Katima, to the eastern tip, in Impalila, both early and late.

In my experience, hunting elephant and plains game later, in September and October, when it's drier, has been better.

Have hunted elephant twice in the Mamili in early August. Risk is that the flooding from the Kwando River which peaks in June-July-August begins to fill the normally dry or slightly water-filled channels near Nkasa Island (the National Park there changed name from Mamili to Nkasa Ruparu). The levels can rise very quickly and leave even 4x4 vehicles at risk of bogging down. Check with your outfitter and ask specifically about the Kwando River flood status if you want to hunt in August/September in that area.

Regards, Tim

Ive hunted three places in the Caprivi - Mashi, Salambala, Kabulabula, all were/are very wet in early summer, thru July most years. Just getting around, by vehicle is tough, until August. All my hunts have been September, and it was very busy with elephants - saw over 1000 in Mashi in less than a week. The other two - there was mass movement in late September across the Chobe, we watched buff and elephant for hours, from two pm until after dark, a constant stream of animals, amazing sight!

I have a couple hunt reports on those two hunts if you look them up.

One thing to consider - that is a late season hunt - the PG selection is either big - previous hunters did not shoot all the quota, or, very sparse, all the quota being shot already. Be aware which is the case on your hunt.
