On June 23rd the S.C.I. Chicago Chapter had our installation dinner at the Adventurer's Club,Chicago. One of the members gave me a booklet on a deceased member of our chapter Roman Hupalowski. You do not hear much about him,but I was fascinated by his life of hunting.

Roman was born in Poland in 1905. He spent three years during WW II in a Russian slave labor camp. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1949. Roman was a pioneer in the field of worldwide safari booking agencies, operating in 1957 as the first safari agent in this country.

Roman assisted Dr. Fisher to obtain a permit as the first hunter for mountain nyala in Ethiopia. After months of delays, and a special request to Emperor Haile Selassie, the permit was granted.

When Tanganyika became independent and was renamed Tanzania, Roman was the only agent authorized by the government to operate safaris in the country.

Roman made 26 safaris to Africa, Shikars in India, Mongolia and just about everywhere you could hunt.

I posted some of his hunt photos that I received. The one photo is Roman with a Scimitar oryx that he just lists as the Sahara Desert. I hope AR members enjoy these photos of a time long past.

Roman was one fine individual. He ran a good show. He was free with advice whether you booked through him or not. He gave me a lot of useful information in the late '60's and '70's.

I'll always remember one thing he told me to forget Alaska and go to India for tiger. Well, I left a deposit in Alaska and went to Africa instead. While I have never regretted starting when I did in Africa, but I sure regret not having another year to get to India before it all ended!

I guess ivory out pulled stripes!

Kathi,
You will have to be the historian of American safari goers...

Interesting story. I have not heard of the man, but have a friend who may know who he is. I will ask him if he has heard of him when I go to visit in a few weeks. He has a very rich hunting past that I hope to uncover when I go to visit. It truely is amazing what stories are hidden under old faces and all it takes is to ask to hear them and a shame about the stories that are left untold.

If I'm not mistaken, ammong his other accomplishments, Mr. Hupalowski opened up hunting in Communist Europe in the 60's.
