Low power scope 1.1-4 or 1.25-4

Planning on buying a low power scope with a wide field of view for a .375. A local dealer has a S&B 1.25-4*20 classic variable. I spent a bit of time with this scope and have to say I’m extremely impressed.

S&B claims that with it’s low power this scope can be used with both eyes open. I found this to be true but it did strain my eyes a little bit when used in this manner.

I noticed that S&B has a new version of this scope in the Zenith line that is 1.1-4*24.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these low power scopes and if the modest .15 power difference would make the 1.1-4*24 a better choice for use with both eyes.

duckin - I too have looked through the S&B and was mighty impressed with the view and by all reports it will withstand much abuse (it should, its costs enough). I've used low powered scopes on my "375" exclusively to include a 3x Leupold, 2.5 Weaver Classic, and a 1x4 Leupold. Not one of them gave me any trouble, but the 1x4 was the easiest to use with "both eyes open" (I normally shoot that way anyway because of a strong "dominant" right eye). The 1x4 Leupold is actually 1.6 to 4.2 power with an eye relief of over 4 inches, so you shouldn't have to worry about "wearing" your scope on you eye ball. And, it is lighter, has a 70 foot field of view at 100 yards, is much less costly than a S&B, and just as reliable (but not quite as bright). My opinion - mags

Duckin,

This afternoon I’ll go hunting with my best friend, an optician. I’ll ask him. Better news, he proposed very low prices, send me your offer.
I learnt optics but I am no specialist. Nonetheless, a 1.1x magnification is very near of 1x. That permits You to comfortably shoot both your eyes open, a great advantage. I have a 1.25-4*25 S&B, great scope but not this easy to shoot with two eyes wide open.

I always wonder why people buy low powered scopes for a .375, when it is a wonderful rifle for ranges and trajectory of that of the .30-06. With a 3X9 I alway crank it down to 3X and if needed turn the power up for long shots (200 yards, never over 300 yards for me). For .40 and up, I go along with the lower powered variables. Just my opinion, no flame intended.

No flame taken.

I actually have couple of Leups that I can use on my .375. These are a VXIII 1.75-6*32mm with heavy duplex and a VXIII 2.5-8*36mm with B&C ret.

Just want a low power wide field of view scope for something different and the ability to shoot with both eyes open is not possible with
the 2 leups that I currently have.

I like the low end scopes because the absolutly hold a zero better than any big belled scope because very little extends beyond the front ring..I have used the 3X, 1x4 and 1.5x5 Leupolds on almost all of my rifles..I see little need for a more powerful scope than 4X for any big game shooting, at least for myself. I have never shot an animal that a 4X would not have worked just as well as say a 9X...including some very long shots. All one has to do is put the cross hairs on an animal and even at 1000 yards that is easily done with any scope....

Nightforce have a couple of new hunting scopes out - one of which is supposed to be a true 1X to 4X variable.
I definitely think our brains get scrambled signals with both eyes open and differing powers for each eye! Obviously the weak side eye is looking along the rifle at true 1x and if the sight picture differs for the other eye then we are overlaying 2 separate sized images.
Obviously it is done but not to the best efficiency if one is chasing speed and accuracy.
I use a 1.25-4.5 Zeiss and it is not perfect due to the lowest available setting being above the true 1x. However the clarity allows me to neck shoot Impala out to 125 yds no problem so I am not handicapped with this max power at all.
If the clarity is there then I don't see the need of top end power in excess of 4x either.

Shooting with both eyes open is a bunch of bunk, I have seen folks that shoot with one eye and they shoot as good as anybody else..It all depends on your skills and experience...

I squient when I shoot, in fact I squient when I piss.... troll
