In a bizarre incident, a man was killed by an elephant and his body mauled by a leopard in the Kruger National Park on Wednesday, police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Captain Benjamin Bhembe said rangers heard gunshots on Wednesday night between 9 and 10. On Thursday morning, they went to the bush to investigate.

Following footprints, the rangers found two pairs of shoes, a jacket and an axe. Alongside were elephant tracks, and blood suggesting the elephant had been wounded by the gunshots.

The rangers found the disfigured body of a man near the river, apparently trampled by the elephant and then mauled by a leopard. Human flesh was found close by.

Bhembe said the rangers believed the man was probably a poacher, and his body was dragged to the river by a leopard.

Police found AK-47 cartridges near the body.

Bhembe said it was believed that the man was not alone, and that the other poachers fled.

There you see, everybody knows an AK47 is not a DG rifle!

All large predators in the KNP are now considered to be man eaters due to the large number of illegal immigrants that try to walk from Mozambique into SA and then get nailed as they come through. So hopefully the leopard that ate the guy may well get the chance of eating some of the other poachers as well!!!
