Adam is in Masailand now looking for a very big elephant for a client. It appears the amazing buffalo hunting is continuing there. Over the last couple of weeks 3 more 45" buffalo have been taken and the largest of the season at an incredible 49". When I have pics I'll post them.

Mark,
I did'nt think Masailand was open to elephant hunting. Am I remembering that wrong or have things changed?

Good luck to Adam! As I recall, elephants are tops on his list! Wink

Last Dec, he was driving with my father-in law in the cab, I was in the back w/the guys. Where they were sitting they couldn't see a group of ele forming a battle-line. It was one of the coolest things I ever witnessed, the matriarch trumpeted and shook her head, at which point all 15-20 ele's in the herd, young included, formed a straight line on either side of her. She began to charge, and the entire herd followed, maintaining the line. We assumed that Adam and Bob saw what was developing, but they were watching a bull to our left in some brush, and the herd was slightly above us to the right, angling to intercept us as we drove along the dirt track. Finally the guys went nuts and Adam looked up and over and saw them at 2-oclock and coming fast. He floored it and we got by them before they could close (I put a nice dent in my Ruger which I was getting ready when Adam hit the gas). I've been chased a handful or more times by cows and bulls, some quite dramatic, but never one like that. The rest of the ele's we saw in Lolkisale were not nearly as aggressive.

Mark, have the short rains/thunderstorms started yet this year?

Yep, Rains started on the 6th or 7th of Nov. Lots of water around. Just got back last night.

I believe this is the first year licenses were issued and the current hunt is the first one this year. Will be interesting to see how it goes.

Scott,

We got 2 ele's on quota this year in Masailand and we're hope for a couple of very big ones. I have no idea how many years it has been since Lobo/Lokisale had elephant on quota but it has been a good while.

Bill,

I remember your story. Sounds like a butt puckering moment and as Bulldog said the short rains have started.

Bulldog,

And your hunt went how?????

Mark

The hunt went very well. 15 animals in 10 days including 3 buffalo (40", 41.75", 45"+), a 29" W.B Wildebeest, 3.5" Dik Dik, and 17" Hyena. First two bulls were taken before rain started and buffalo really started to come in from the park.... 45 was taken on day 9 after a great stalk on a HUGE herd. Saw a bull that had to go 47"+ on day 8 but passed him up because he was soft in front. Have a nice picture though. Will try to get a hunt report together some time soon.

There was a 10 day starting the day we left which should be great.

Definitely a very special area and the place to go if you want a real chance at huge buffalo. Highly Recommended!

Bulldog- Were you in Lobo or Lolkisale? My hunting partner and I are heading to Lobo in less than 2 weeks dancing
Any pointers you can pass our way would be appreciated. Thanks. Brian

Went to Lobo for a day to bag a Grants but rest of the time was in Lokisale. My main advice would be to have (realistic) goals and stick to them because the big bulls are there. I think Lobo will be a bit tougher hunting because it is much thicker then Lokisale but very good bulls have been taken from both areas recently. There was a monster in the skinning shed at Lobo when I was there. Good Luck!

How long are you going for?
