Hi Guys, In the beginning stages of planning a bowhunt for 2 guys for Cape Buffalo for 2007, or maybe even 2008 (1x1 or really 2x2) -- could also be 2 gun hunters to follow immediately after. Was thinking about either Zambia or Tanzania (not certain about the affordability of either). What we're really looking for is a realistic opportunity to bowhunt buffalo with someone who knows bowhunting, with a solid track record of success. The Luangwa Valley interests us, because of the availability of Hippo in addition to Buff -- just really don't know any proven bowhunting operations there. Been on 3 previous bowhunting safaris for Plainsgame and will be darting a Rhino this year. Noticed a big difference between outfitters on previous African bowhunts. Buff and other dangerous game is new to us, and we wish to ensure that PH's understand bowhunting and operate in an area condusive to bowhunting success. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Mike Murray of African Field Sports supposedly has a pretty good bowhunting set up in SA. I have been to Botswana with Mike. I haven't seen his SA property but I know it is in the Eastern Cape and they have something like 20-25 blinds set up on water holes, salt licks, etc. Mike is a really good PH and honest guy. I would definitely give him a call or email if you get a chance. The website is; http://www.africansports.co.za/ Edit; If you have Jack Brittinghams African hunting DVD's vol. 2 and 3 he is in both. Vol 2 hunting Ele(rifle) and Vol 3 Derby Eland with a bow.

It's my understanding trophy fees for bow kills in Tanzania are double. I'd think about that one. It's very likely going to be very very difficult to find a PH in Tanzania experienced in dealing with a bowhunter. I don't want to start a one is better than other thread but the mindsets of both types of hunting are different. I urge you to locate a PH that understands and is experienced with that. A friend of mine just had a very trying time in Argentina where his host had no experience whatsoever with archers. He learned alot from that experience.

I PH for water buffalo in Australia and most of my hunters are bowhunters and I have been a bowhunter myself for over 40 years and I strongly agree that your outfitter and PH be EXPERIENCED with bowhunters and even better he is one himself. I have seen a lot of problems with inexperienced PH's and bowhunter even though experienced they aren't experienced with animals like buffalo, its a very different game. I am lookng forward to more answers on this subject as I plan to get back to Africa and hunt buff myself.

Why don't you contact Ann of Aspen Hill Adventures? Ann bowhunts herself and she should be able to give you some information. She posts regularly here on AR.

Bow hunting in Tanzania is open. however, the Gov fees as well as trophy fees are double those for rifle hunting. In most cases, bow hunting in tanzania is conducted just as rifle hunting is ("spot and stalk") i.e. no pre-set blinds by water holes, salt licks, etc as these are illegal as per the Hunting Act. Zambia, zimbabwe and Mozambique are probably better alternatives. "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. Hunter describing the early explorers and settlers of East Africa hunting is not about the killing but about the chase of the hunt.... Ortega Y Gasset

Contact a PH in Zimbabwe named Pierre Van Wyk. Pierre I belive is now working for HHK. Pierre is a bowhunter himself and a great PH. I know he has guided bowhunters before. I always rifle hunte with Pierre but he can get you very close to buff. and understands bowhunting. I think this is his email still pvwhs@gatorzw.co.uk Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
