Just returned from sci reno where i looked at a ruger express in 458 lott. How does this round compare with the others in its class? I already have a 375 so im looking for a heavy. Can i buy factory ammo or is it strictly a reload?

I just ordered a box of factory 458 lott ammo. I just purchased a Ruger #1. The ammo is by hornady. They also offer reloading brass at a reasonable price.

ALF, I would venture to say that the problem the candidates were having was due to not being used to the rifles they were using. I have two M77 Magnum models, a .375 H&H and a .416 Rigby(a third a .450 Rigby is in progress), and it took me a few times shooting to get used to the longer throw of my .416. Now there is no problem, feeds correctly every time. They were not offering the Lott when I made my decision on the .450 Rigby, almost wish I had waited.......on second though I guess not. Alf, Not doubting you but how did that data come to you? How recent is it? I am always curious about this type of info. Having been a firearm instructor for a police agency for going on 14 years, I am always curious about the the source of data. One reason is 90+ percent of the malfunctions I have seen are operator error or a dirty weapon. Followed by 90+ percent % of the time when I hear about it a few days later it is suddenly a bad weapon. [ 02-03-2003, 08:55: Message edited by: Mike Dettorre ]

I consider the Ruger 77 Safari, the best factory rifle out there, but like any DGR, out of the box, it should have a complete going over...Polish the rails, check the feed and extract and make it 110%, glass bed the rifle, add cross bolts if needed, check the accuracy and sight the iron sights in...fix what is wrong before you have a malfunction. As I recall the old pre war FN 375 was the top dog at Heaths contest...I happen to have a very nice one for sale BTW, has Talley fitted bases, and Don Heath is right, it feeds, extracts, shoots well and is a great DGR, but with my newly finished Holland and Holland 375 I am parting with it. I ran an add in the Gunlist last week.
