Guys,
Can someone help me put with a gear list?
I'm leaving next week, and our boys are meeting us on the 18th
I don't really have a gear list as such...
Does anyone have a gear list they can throw up, so my boys can read it to pack?
It would be greatly appreciated!!
Mark, did you send me one last year? I remember someone sendingnme a really good one, but damn it, I can't find it!!

Dean,

Our updated personal travel list on the way via e-mail. Both you and your wife should find it useful as Sadie wrote it to specifically cover everything for what both men and women will need.

Maybe you could post your list. I'm sure others who are preparing for their first trip would find it useful. I know I would. If you don't want to post it, perhaps you could PM it to me. Thanks.

Just a note about gun oil. TSA confiscated my small bottle of gun oil saying it was flamable, but did not take my commercially made oil cloths packed in individual aluminum foil packs.

It's 4 pages but I'd be happy to send it to anybody. Just send me an email and I'll return that e-mail with the list.

Gun, ammo, two sets of clothes, shoes and positive attitude and you are as good as ready.
At least that works for me. It's only a hunting trip

that works for me too. the above list would require me to hire 2 porters for the trip to lug that much stuff around. everything i take fits in 1 med soft case (with room left over for a few curios), plus a small carry on backpack.

Maybe a bullet proof vest and a helmet. After the election results are officialy made public (if you can call it that) these things might just come in handy. Eeker Hopefully things won't be a repeat of the events that took place last time?

Dino,

You really don't need much stuff. I'm just back from my 2nd trip to Zim and my total luggage including ammo and .416 Rigby was 26kg. My advice, keep it really simple.

3 sets hunting clothes ( you will only use 2 as they will wash every day)
1 pair shorts and a couple T shirts for the evenings around the fire.
1 fleece (will be warming up now)
1 pair boots and 1 sandles
1 pair clothes to travel in

Gun
5kg ammo
Very small cleaning kit
Medicines (personal plus travel stuff like stomach upset pills)
Blister kit!!!!!! Foot powder!
Good hat
Sunscreen berocca etc
Binoculars
Camera
Small torch
Small Knife
Gifts for trackers
10 envelopes for tips at the end makes it easy to divvy up
Spare copy of all travel docs

1st year I took 30kg and didn't use it all. 2nd year I took the above and didn't use it all...

I usually get a couple of nice bottles of cognac or similar to share round the fire and I haven't met a Ph yet that doesn't like a good stogie. Have to pick these up once out of Aus so my wife doesn't see them!

My advice is keep it really simple and enjoy being out in the bush. Lastly I take a small backpack with medicine, one set clothes and camera. If the rest gets lost you will still go hunting!

Best of luck!

Cheers

Daniel

And your cartridge belt/holder plus a sling.

And this is what happens, you keep thinking of more and more crap to take and then you need another bag. Then there's so much stuff you can't find anything.

Then when you go to leave camp at the end of the trip you are inevitably packing all this crap back in when you are either on the sauce or hung over trying to get ready for the plane. Then it doesn't fit the way it did when you spent 2 days carefully packing it back home.

This is usually where if you're on the sauce you just say f@,& it, I'll sort it tomorrow morning before I fly and then end up cursing over a full bag with your head feeling like it won't zip up either.

Moral of the story, take minimum stuff, take one big soft bag and fill it. Then take 20% back out and leave that at home. This way it will all nicely fit back in while/after you have celebrated your hunt on the last night.

Or you could not indulge on the last night. But I haven't tried that and it wouldn't be very Australian anyway...

Cheers

Daniel

Will the airlines allow a backup scope to be included in carry on baggage?

Generally the answer is "No" - I have personally experienced other hunters going through TSA check in Dulles and through security in Harare who were made to take the spare scope out of their carry on and retrieve their checked luggage and place the spare scope in a checked bag. I always wrap up my spare scope in a T-shirt or socks and and put it in my hard sided locked gun case. I have never had a problem doing this in 5 safaris.
