My first hunt was for 14 days and had a Leopard permit and hunted plains game. I have no problem with not taking a leopard. I did another 2 PG hunts 16 and 15 days. I also did a green Rino hunt on the last 15 day hunt. I am now going for Leopard again but this time the leopard is basically it. If I ever wanted to do a buff hunt it would be it only. I think for DG you must concentrate on that alone. If a PG specie presents it self ok but you don't vere from you prime game animal. To hunt for good trophy PG takes prime concectration on each animial you are after. If you only want a 20" Impala etc ok.

1st Timer,

Having done both I would say dangerous game hunting (especially Cape buffalo) is what African hunting is all about.

Going plains game hunting is good, but adding that bit of wonderfulness of hunting for dangerous game really moves it up a notch (thanks, Emeril!).

My first African hunt was a 7 day hunt in Zim for buffalo plus plains game including kudu, impala, warthog, duiker, etc. It was also the first hunt where I ever had a guide (ph over there). I had always hunted alone before. That actually took more getting used to than the buffalo.

The other dangerous game - elephant, lion, leopard, rhino - are pretty specialized and may best be saved for later hunts. If you have the interest, can afford it, and can handle the gun to do it, then by all means go after buffalo. Hippo and croc can be dangerous - they may be doable if in your area. Check with your outfitter if they interest you.

Good Luck

My first hunt was for PG in Namibia and I made sure I spent the time and effort to do it up right. Got a wide variety of tremendous scoring animals, on a wonderful 15 day hunt. As for another PG hunt, it will have to be incidental to other species. The next trip in '06 or '07 will probably be a split country trip and have to focus on buffalo, leopard, sable, bushbuck, nyala, and any other local species to the areas.

1st timer,

I went to RSA twice for PG. My next hunt will be in Zimbabwe for Buff/Leopard/PG in a couple years. But, I never planned to go just once...

If you have thoughts of a once-in-a-lifetime hunt, by all means make it inclusive and get it all done in one 14-21 day hunt. Just be ready to pay a sizeable lump sum over a short period of time.

Me, I'll spread out the fun a bit and make the $ part easier to bear over a longer period of time.

Just my $.02.
