News Letter 2010. The 2010 season is over. I am going to call this the year of the boot. In 30 years of hunting I have never experienced so much noise (maybe because I am getting cranky in my old age) from probably the most important part of equipment on safari. Jesus sandals (yours eventually as Jaws the stump takes you out) to running shoes and boots weighing in at 5lbs each. Please guys you must have the right equipment, in my opinion Russell’s or Browning are the American way to go or otherwise Courtney’s it’s so important. What is a fact that America continues to manufacture the finest footwear in the world and the noisiest. The hunting this year was as good as I have seen it for years. Buffalo was prima some great trophies taken, on my last hunt at Matetsi four buffalo over 40 inches taken the biggest 43 ½ .The issue on that concession is are they in from the park or not, secondly the burn is critical, unfortunately this can only take place later in the year. Elephant this year were relatively quiet. A Sixty was taken by the company lots of 40s and 50s . The biggest taken this year in Zimbabwe was 86 ½ really a brute. In my opinion early or late is the call. Matetsi is producing huge lions, yes they are expensive but quality, both lions shot by the company were monsters. Especially later on in the year jaws was seen virtually every day. Leopards were tough this year however as usual a few monsters taken. For myself not great, lots and lots of work and no luck, hunting in the Government controlled areas without a light is a different ball game, every plan has to be immaculate. Clients must be able to take the shot at 100 yards minimum, very important. Plains game was good this year with some spectacular trophies taken .Matetsi sable continue to dominate, as good as anywhere in Africa ,some great trophies taken. For me the two highlights of the year were one the invitation to shoot doves in Argentina by Lloyd and Peter absolutely stunning, words can’t describe it. How many rounds do you want to fire in a day? I thank both you guys for a once in a life time trip for me. Secondly through the efforts of John Penek I was made an honoree member of the Camp Fire Club of America the oldest and most prestigious hunting club started by Teddy Roosevelt. For me it was the first time I was ever awarded any mention for my efforts in the hunting arena. My sincere thanks to the Chairman and his committee, for me it was a great honor. Family wise Clive had a great season, George has moved on to greener pastures? To all of you guys who put up with me thanks. A word of thanks to Graham who kept us running this year and to Jennifer who is a star thanks Darling. Both Jean and I will be at the shows and look forward to seeing you guys. Wishing you all a happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year. Best regards, Lou and Jean | ||
