Yes,

You, should get great results as long as your shots dont go over 250 meters. As the bullet drop from there should be quite a bit.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

I used Woodleigh weldcores and protected points. .338 win mag, 225 and 250 grain. Wonderful performance!

SkiBump, can you give some specifics on the kills/performance with the 225gr PP Weldcore out of your .338 win mag?

In two weeks I will be taking the exact same set up to British Columbia for an elk hunt.

On my plains game hunt in South Africa in 2005, I took my CZ 550 in 9.3x62 and my Rem 700 in 8x57JS as a backup rifle. I mainly used my 9.3x62 for hunting but I did take a couple of Impala (one trophy and one cull) and a couple of Warthog culls with my 8x57. The 220 gr Woodleigh RN worked like a charm.

Not the usual trophy photo pose of course. Sorry for showing the blood. This is how we found him after my shot and I wanted a photo of how we found him. The 220 gr Woodleigh hammered him hard. He went about 10 yards and fell over.

Hi
thank you all for the replies.
BOb
have you tried 200 grain nosler PT in your 8 mm? it seems 200 grain pointed @ around 2700 fps is possible in 8x57 and it would outpreform 3006 with 180 grain every time. if you you have som loading data please send it to me.

yes,

I haven't tried working up a load for the 200 gr Nosler Partition. I have a couple of boxes but I just haven't tried working up a load yet. I just haven't gotten around to it. I've been fooling around with some other rifles the last year or two and I haven't worked with my 8x57 very much since my trip to South Africa back in 2005.

Here's a table listing some specs for European ammo for the 8x57. I use it as a guideline for velocities that should be possible with various bullet weights in the 8x57.

Just looking at the table, 2700 fps with a 200 gr Nosler might be a little optimistic. However, I think 2600 or so should be no problem. But, like I said, I haven't tried working up a load with the 200 gr Nosler yet. I did try some of the S&B 196 gr SPCE factory ammo in my rifle. As the table shows, it has a factory spec velocity of 2592 fps. In my Rem 700 Classic, it gave a chrono'd average muzzle velocity of 2647 fps (instrumental; extreme spread 31 fps ; standard deviation 10 fps).

Cheers!

Bob
those S&B 196 spce rounds I have tried a box and they shoot great in my gun, much better than their fmj rounds. i tested them (SPCE) on wet paper and these bullets are very very soft!!. i will not dare to shoot a moose or real big game with them, but they are certainly a very good deer slayers. unfortunately I can't find RWS ammo here they tend to be very good . i have orderd some 220 grain sierra from S&B and i've heard that they are a very good preformer on heavier games.
