AFter hearing so much about the Tanzania experience I want to experience it too. However, I cannot afford a 16 day or 21 day license. The 7 day Buff I can swing.

On the 7 day hunts in Tanzania, I believe the animals on license our 2 Buffalo, Thompson's Gazelle, Grant's Gazelle, Impala, warthog, Zebra, White Bearded Wildebeest, and Klipspringer.

I am most interested in the Buff and obtaining the Gazelle's. When I have spoken to people about this I have heard that where the Gazelle's are there are not good population of Buffalo. If the above was my priority what areas would you hunt, any outfitter recommendations. ANy other suggestions, opinions, would be greatly appreciated.

Last years 7 day license included 2 buffalo, one zebra, one kongoni, one impala, one warthog, and one wildebeaste. I don't think the thompson and grants are availabe on 7 day license unless the Tanzanian game department wised up a bit and started allowing some other plains game animals to be taken on the 7 day permit. That would encourage hunters to book other areas of the country to hunt other plains game specis along with the buffalo. If you hunt Tanzania more than once and do take the 5 other animals, then there is nothing else you could shoot but the buff unless you want to improve your trophy quality a bit. There are those outfitters that post regularly on this forum that say that a 7 day buffalo hunt is just that and the other plains game would be shot after the buffalo or as true targets of opportunity and should not be counted on on this short safari.

It depends on which area you hunt and the species that occur in each area as to exactly what species you are allowed to take on the licence, but it boils down to this:

Selous

2 Buff

2 Wildebeest

1 Burchell's Zebra

1 Warthog

1 Lichensteins Hartebeest

1 Southern Impala

Masailand

2 Buffalo

1 Grant's Gazelle

1 Thompsons Gazelle

1 East African Impala

1 Burchell's Zebra

1 Warthog

1 Cokes Hartebeest

1 White Bearded Wildebeest

You are only allowed to take males of the species and you will find all trophy prices and package prices etc on my website.

Tanzania has a lot of small additional charges for things like rifle import and other fees, so when you price your hunt you need to make sure of exactly what is included and what is not. We include all of these odds and sods, but most companies do not.......so be warned.

We also have hunting in the Burigi area of Tanzania which allow you to take a Topi instead of the L.Hartebeest/c. Hartebeest, but if you're on a 7 day licence I wouldn't recommend it. The area is only at it's best for other species such as Sitatunga.

Selous has the largest Buffalo populations in Africa, and early & late season will see you hunting in herds of up to 80-100 and in the peak you might see herds of up to 1000.

Masailand is a lot more rain dependant and has far fewer Buffalo (but trophies tend to be bigger). If the rains fail, you can run the risk of not getting both Buffalo.

If it's your first Buff hunt I would recommend you choose Selous if possible.

You should also make sure that you are hunting in the area promised as the buffer zones don't hold anywhere near the number of Buff as the Selous proper.

If you need any more info, just send me an e-mail.

The buffer zones often are areas of enterprise as wood cutters were all over the place and followed us whenever we were on foot when we were in the Mahenge area.It is not in the Selous reserve proper.

Leonard,

You'll be pleased to hear the the Mahenge people have now ceased trading......

I also forgot to say that if you hunt any of the good areas in Tanzania you can pretty much expect to take all of the game that are on the licence and occur in the areas during your 7 day hunt......certainly the areas we use usually allows this.

Shakari, If one wanted to go to the Maasi for a buffalo hunt, how many days would you think it would take to assure the two buffalo and a good specimen of the other game on license? Is a 10 day hunt enough??

Hi Leonard,

If you gave me 10 days in Mid to late July or the same amount of time in mid to late November I think you would have an excellent chance of filling the licence.

Kev-These are what Tanzania will allow you to take on 7-day hunts, some will have a pkg. deal, but usually for buffalo only, anything else will be extra for trophy fees, etc. Most animals, such as elephant, leopard, lion, etc. are only available on the longer 14-21 day hunts, but you can bust two buffalo on the 7-day jaunts with a little luck. Usually only about $900 extra trophy fee for the 2nd one.

We offer a 7 day Buff package in the Selous which includes rifle import, all the odds & sods fees, charter into and out of the area, trophy fee & CDC for the 1st Buff, dip, pack and delivery of trophies to a shipping agent in Dar es Salaam etc.

Then the ONLY additional payments you face are hotel accommodation before or after the hunt, any additional trophy fees & CDC for whatever other animals you take (I include the CDC in the trophy fee) alcohol & tips.

ALL prices and full details are on my website.

Tanzania has 7, 14 & 21 day licences available and each licence allows you to take a different collection of species, for Example if you want Lion, Leopard and/or Elephant you need a 21 day licence.

If you (or anyone) would like me to e-mail you the camp descriptions, prices, photographs and a breakdown of costs etc please just send me an e-mail and I'll be happy to forward it by return.

I can't speak for all areas in the Selous, but if you hunted in the area we use you could easily expect to take both Buff and the other species on your licence..... the only one that is sometimes a little tricky is the L. Hartebeest, but if you can shoot well you can also expect to get one.

Every hunt we've done for the last 5 years in the Selous has had 100% success except one 21 day hunt we did last year when we failed to get an Elephant...... but in my defence we only looked for Mr Bigears for 5 days and we took everything else the client wanted including 2 Buff in one hour and an East African Eland that will score a new #4 in Rowland Ward and a new #1 in SCI. (if the client enters them)

To answer this specific question of yours, masaailand is the only area where you will find the gazelles. However, you must understand that no ONE area of Masaailand offers ideal numbers of the three species you are after; namely, buff, Grant's gazelle and Thompson's gazelle. For example; the best Masaailand areas for buffalo is probably Lokisale, Simanjiro and Masaai Open on the Eastern border of Tarangire. But they are by far not the best Masaailand areas for the gazelles! The best areas for the gazelles are without a doubt Lake Natron and Monduli G.C.A. but these are rather hard for buffalo as they are found in the mountain forest at 9,000+ feet a.s.l.. So like everything else when planning an African hunt, you must be prepared to make compromises! Which is more important to you of the three? Buff, tommy or Grant's? Choose your hunt based on that. Lastly, 7 days is on the short side to fulfill your desire of taking 2 buff and the 2 gazelles.

If you need further info, send me a PM. By the way, I am not an outfitter or PH so I try to be unbiased in my opinions
