Thanks
Sometime ago I was scouting around the Gunsmithing forum for a PH affordable bit of wood to restock my .404J Charles Osborne. It is my carry gun and therefore the wood had to be strong rather than pretty.

Some very generous AR member (who wishes to remain anonymous) very kindly duplicated my old stock and sent me (via Steve416) a semi finished piece of walnut free of charge. I had the whole thing completed by Zimbabwean gunsmith residing here in Zambia.

Here is the final result and I am really chuffed. Many thanks mate.

The only interesting gun is an accurate one.

Will put it through its paces when next in the bush.

That's an awfully pretty piece of wood for you to be taking it into the jesse. It's gonna get scratched, dented, dinged up........You should just send it to me and I'll keep it safe for you. jumping

I love the AR crowd just for that reason. I was looking at a barrel in 8x57 and was bitching how much they cost here in Australia. An AR member from the States sent me a ex mil barrel for nothing. tu2

Very nice Andrew!

And to such a deserving caliber... (and PH of high caliber).

There are some really great people on this forum.

Nice rifle Andrew. Any reason for the glossy finish? Is it hard epoxy?

No Naki I just wiped it with a bit of oil to enhance the wood.

What a good bunch there is on AR. Looks just the job.

Andrew,

If that is an oil finished job, you had me fooled. Your gunsmith certainly knows his tricks!
Maybe I could send one of mine to him for similar treatment.

That picture looks like some fresh oil was applied only for the photo effect.

A typical oil finished stock is a dull luster IN the wood & not ON the wood.

A shiny stock like that would spook game quickly - hence my earlier question if it was epoxy finished - looks like a Browning or Weatherby finish.

Lovely wood & I am sure the stock will quickly gain its pedigree character in the bush very soon! Wink

Naki:

A professionally executed oil finish will be just as resplendent as a varnish or epoxy job.

The difference being when you put a scratch on an epoxy finish it aint going to disappear in a hurry, whereas an oil finish is inclined to be more forgiving.

I had 2 doubles and a bolt dolled up by Paul Roberts many moons ago and the woodwork was oil finished only the way J. Roberts & Son knew how.

Part of the service included a small bottle containing the "secret oil formula" for the touch up jobs when yours truly got careless.
