Trust you have enjoyed your time in SA irrespective of all the name changes taking place.

The university I attended suddenly doesn't exist any more!
Used to be Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (CHE).
Now known as NWU (North West University).
The city of Potchefstroom's suggested new name is Thlokwe!!!

Just think how much money is wasted in these totally non-productive exercises above!

One thing is sure: Nobody can take away what we have learned, experienced and know as facts over the years - name changes or no name changes - we are still what we were and will ever be just that!

Life sucks! thumbdown thumbdown

C'mon Alf. You just picked up another unbelievable 404 Jeffery and you're worried about plant, bird and town name changes? Get over it buddy! As you may know, my field of work is related to dendrology, silvics, ecology, biology, forest resources management, aboriginal relations, etc. I have learned you have to just "let it go" as there are many other, larger, fish to fry, and lifes to short to worry about what ultimately comes down to semantics. Think again about all those beautiful Mausers you have and tell me if you really think "Life Sucks!". Roll Eyes

As the kids say around here..."Suck it up, princess!". Smiler

Cheers,

What he fails to understand is that to this day for many English speaking or otherwise the afrikaans name is the common name in use for many of our bird species.

ALF, I aggree fully, but taxonomy is just one of those sciences that you are 'in or out'!!! I sometimes wonder about whay those changes are made, some seem plausible, some seem like scientists laying claim to me!!

English, Afrikaans and indigenous common names have their place for sure, I aggree that Afrik names are part of the taxonomic history, perhaps more so than English ones.

Jagter, I am some years your junior and my Uni's names have both changed...thats the way she goes. Two of the uni's I have had involvement with in Canada have also changed names in the last 3 years, so it isn't geographically isolated! Its is confusing however to have a degree from one and transcripts from another but actually the same place bewildered

Life is great ALF!!!

kayaker, you know what?

It is true what you're saying "..... that's the way she goes."

But you know, because names that were supposed to be there for many decades, centuries and eventually quite a number of generations, now being changed, sometimes more than once like your unis' names, within the short period of one generation only, no traditions or national history are build up on which a nation can be proud.
Without a familiar background and the necessary proud, if one can put it that way, attached to it, a nation becomes drifters or rolling stones.

As the saying goes: "Rolling stones never gather moss."

Locally, in SA, that is what it is all about.
