This may be a dumb question but I was wondering the other day how the PH stays in contact with his staff or other PHs while in the bush. For example, say that some emergency happened far from camp, how would the PH get help? Radio?Satellite phones? Or, and this is the dumb part of the question, are there any cell towers our in the wilds of Africa? What is the norm? Thanks, Landrum. | ||

In Africa? A half naked runner carrying a letter tied to a forked stick has worked for a long long time! If the movie director is good the poor runner meats up with a prowling lion, or some other great beasts!  In all seriousness: There are horses for courses! In many areas of south Africa cell phone reception is quit erelaible, and can be relied on in an emergency. There is, of course a fellow called Mr. Murphey prowling the african bush seeking PH's who do not have a Plan B! Radio comms are as good as you are prepared to spend money on equipment - and license fees and BEE partners! The ultimate - also in cost - is Satelite phones. This year, the guys in camp ahead of us had truck trouble out in the bush. They slept in the truck and the trackers walked back to camp in the night!!!!! All they had was a torch, and not even a Surefire at that. Telly | |||

The amount of hassels involved in attempting to go about using radios across borders legally in southern Africa is quite enough to force all but the very strong to resort to bribery or "just keep quiet and take your chances" - tactics!
