His horns are too big and are probably causing his neck to cramp under the strain of their weight. You should shoot him IMMEDIATELY so he doesn't suffer any longer.

I'd say he's getting close to world record potential, in the 33-35 inch range I would say. One more year with high protein feed and bingo.

Wow! tu2 Having shot three very good nyala bulls before, I would definitely shoot a fourth if that one came into range!

Many seem to reach the 29" mark without turning out too much. This one is turning out a mile. Just a guess but I would have to agree with L. David Keith on this one, pushing 35".

I have never been to Africa an know nothing of these animals.

If I saw that I would have passed on it as an immature Kudu!

I'd put him in the 33-35" area.

Until I read on this post (and viewed a nyala on the tape)I aloways had thought that no trip to Africa was worthwhile for anything except DG. I have lived to learn (as a one time hunter for DG)that there can be some pretty magnificent trophies besides DG. (I thought of the picture of the nyala like a magnified version of suddenly confronting a white tail deer in woods -both of us surprised - and the deer recovering first!Smiler I was particularly glad to read the comments of experienced hunters in that part of the world that it was a magnificent nyala - and I never saw a nyala in my life -but recognized him as a trophy when I saw the tape. I guess that hunters -the world over are the same in their instincts.

Andrew, I'm no expert on nyala, having hunted very few with clients so far, but would it not be wise to also see this bull from the side before making any guesses? I have seen nyala with outsplaying tips, but very shallow bend back, which propably did not measure that much then.

For me there's more to consider than just length when it comes to Nyala (and I've never shot one) and that's shape and thickness but mostly shape.

Steve, it is Anne Dodgson who took this #1 with a rifle. Score was 84 5/8ths.

DB, I couldn't agree more. Nyala come in a variety of shapes. Here's few we took last year:

There is more than one shape to consider besides the typical lyre shape. Another is the bell shape. I have two great lyre shaped nyala trophies and one very nice bell shaped trophy. Both shapes of horns are beautiful in their own right. Big Grin This is one of the lyre shaped trophies: This is the bell shaped trophy:
