How about torture? Plenty of true blooded Americans would almost certainly approve of it. Plenty of Americans think that "Hey, mistakes are made in war, 'ol Lt. Calley was just doing his best, can't blame the poor guy, he's been railroaded...". And those poor Marines in Iraq, they are being shot at from all sides, can't tell the good guys from the bad. Hey you can't make an omlet without breaking a few eggs". So what if a few innocent civilians get shot or raped, this is war, man". How about slavery? Was slavery OK before, but suddenly, perhaps gradually, is not OK? Plenty of people were against slavery and thought it immoral, down through the ages. It just took a while for the rest to catch up. My position is that slavery was immoral all along. Peter. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;

But Peter, not everyone approves of torture nor did everyone approve of slavery. You said that something was immoral even when everyone approves of it so these are not good examples. But for argument's sake lets look at torture. Some think it morally reprehensible while others think it is acceptable - certainly no universal ethics there.

I think the "debate" about 'ethics' in hunting should be more about the level of physical fitness needed to hunt properly and put in the true hard yakka a proper hunt requires.
