Beat place for Eland/Sable/Leopard

Just thinking out loud here.

I have been to Africa twice. In 2000 to Zim for plains game and in 2003 to Tanzania for Buff and a mixed bag of a dozzen other animals.

If money was no object I would go back to TZ and go on a 21 day elephant/leopard hunt and get a Sable and Eland and if there was time perhaps a few more buff.

With the spiraling inflation of prices in TZ I know unless I win the lotto I will never be back.

I would like to go back to Africa and do a 14 day(give or take) hunt for Eland, Sable and leopard.

I want to wait untill my 1 year old and 3 year old can go and enjoy it (I am thinking about 4 years) I am hoping that things in Zim will reach meltdown soon and will have gotten better by then as I think that Zim is the best country for these 3 animals and I can't see prices getting as bad a TZ.

Another place I have thought about is Mozambique.

If you're thinking about four years or more in the future, any research you do now would be effectively wasted. - Four years is a long time in Africa and in that time period you could expect anything from fire, famine & flood to mad dictators, governments rising and falling and refugees eating everything with legs or wings to change the situation entirely. - To say nothing of hunting areas being taken over or changing hands in legal ways.

Start your research a year before you want to hunt and then make a decision a few months after you've begun your research.

That goes for every country in Africa.

I would get in touch with either Shangaan Hunters, Save Valley Safaris, Zambezi Hunters, or Mokore Safaris. All have camps located in the Save Conservancy. All four are top notch outfits and the three animals you want are there in abbundance with great trophies to be had. However I would contact them at least two years before you are going to go. These guys are in very high demand.

I think you should go now and back again with your kids in 4 years so you can do the research yourself. Life is what happens to you while you are planning other things. Tell your wife you are going to make the sacrifice of going all alone to do the research yourself, stand all alone the full charge

and then decide.

US: Some savvy advice from those who live there. I would go ASAP and concentrate on Leopard. In four years you may or may not obtain a CITES permit. Big cats are always a target of the anti's. Come back later with your children and get you an Eland and Sable. And as Steve said; a lot can happen in 4 years when it comes to Africa. Leopard hunting is still affordable in Zim.

Your kids at 5 -7 years old are not going to like a leopard hunt, they will squirm, get cold, have to go potty and do all the things kids that age have to do and you will be in a leopard blind! You will spend all day collecting and hanging baits, etc. Go do the leopard hunt NOW while you can and then take the kids back when you can just have fun. And I agree with David, contact Roger Whittall for the chance at a true monster.

One of the big advantages of Zim for a Leopard hunt (other than cost) is that there are a lot of really good catmen there. Roger Whittal, John Sharpe and Lou Hallamore amongst 'em.

Sevenmagltd makes a very good point, a Leopard hunt is no place for young children. They'll get bored, bugger up the hunt by diverting the attention that should be on the hunt itself and drive both you and your PH nucking futs!

Another thing to consider is what type of experience you want. Pro-Safaris for instance can do the leopard/buffalo in a 900,000 acre wilderness setting and before or after do a 3 day add-on in Doma for a good sable. A little wilder experience than the Save but requiring a change of areas.
