We are on final countdown for our safari with Peter Chipman and Kafunta Safaris. We will be hunting in the lower Lapundi concession with Peter Chipman and his assistant Sarge for Buff, puku, and possibly leopard. There is possibly one leopard available on license in the area.

Ib404, Have a great trip. It sounds like you are more than ready to go. Are the logistics much different going to Zambia than say Tanzania? I've never really paid attention and I'm starting to think Zambia might not be too bad for buffalo. Thanks Joe

Good luck - Enjoy the journey - and of course the hunting! A leopard tag, that would be terriffic, hope it works out for you. There are a lot of leopard in the LL. Don't forget the Baby Ruths for Peter! Bill

PS: Just for clarification, the name of Peter's company is Kwalata Safaris, "Kafunta" is the photo lodge in the concession run by a PH who hunts for Peter.

Rusty, You might keep in touch with my family. Should I not return, there are three new rifles by Davenport on their way home. A 500 Jeffery, a 404 Jeffery, and a 9,3x62. All three will look like original Jeffery rifles and on 1935 Orberndorf commercial Chilean contract actions and Kreiger barrels. I am hoping to have them for next year's hunt.

I'm not IB404, but I can tell you it is an easy trip to the Upper, and Lower Lupandi concessions. You can fly from Lusaka, the country's capital, to the Village of Mfuwe by comercial airline. These flights do not fly daily, however, so you may have to overnight in Lusaka. The village of Mfuwe is only a few miles from the concession, and most opperators there will pick you, and your gear up at the airport. The south Luangwa National park is near to the village as well, as another lodge, owned by an Aussie guy who PHes for Peter on occasion, but I can't remember the name of it!

IB404,Good luck on your hunt. You will like Peter Chipman, he is a great guy, and he knows his busines! beer

I've hunted that concession and I think this late you will find very good buffalo there as well as plains game. Leopard are also abundant there. We saw 3 in daylight and shot one 50 yards from the road on the first night in the blind.

If you have not taken hippo and croc you may never have a better opportunity since the Luangwa is loaded with them.

Have a ball!

IB404, have a great trip. We were there in 99, stayed in Kakuli camp.

Mac, I think the Aussie is Ron Cowan. He was our ph in 99. I would love to tell him hello. He and his wife Anka run a lodge for tours in the Park. Great people.

Our outfitter, however, was a different story. I can't remember his name,(maybe Alex something)but he seemed to be in a bit of a spot with Lion permits and the government.

After further review, it appears Kafunta Safaris director is RON COWAN! I just sent him an e mail. IB404, if you see Ron, tell him Glen says hello, and also tell him about this board. Best of luck again. By the way, there is a very large, old leopard in the Fundakudu hills, if he hasn't died from old age.

GAV - I hunted lion and buffalo with Peter Chipman last September. His company (the one that hunts the Lower Lupande) is called KWALATA SAFARIS.

This is a different outfitter/PH then you hunted with in 1999, Peter got the concession after the re-opening. Rumor has it that the previous operator was one of the contributing factors behind the ~2.5yr closure.

Ron and his wife still run (own?) the lodge and photo/touring company located within the hunting concession, called KAFUNTA SAFARIS. Ron hunts for Peter also, and seems like a great guy, and their lodge is very nicely done. They have a child too, may have been just an infant when you were there. I thought at the time how nice it would be to hunt buffalo for 7-days then spend a few days relaxing with my wife and family at Ron and Anka's place. Regards, Bill

You are correct Bill, but I just noticed that IB404 said he was hunting with Kafunta. I see that it must be Kwalata.

Yes, spending a few days to rest up at Ron and Ankas would be just the top off of a great trip. Luke was actually still in the oven when we were there in 99.

You are correct about the outfitter, but I still wonder if he had to pay for what happened, or if he escaped to South America or something. Let me know if you have any info on this guy. Thanks again, Glen.

Thanks all for thhe good cheer. We are, in fact hunting with Ron Cowan out of the
Kafunta lodge. We may also spend some time with Sarge, Peter's nephew (I think). Life is an adventure that one must drink. Unfortunate are the ones that don't drink!

Does anyone know who this outfitter was, and who his PHs were? The UPPER LUPANDE concession was by Charl Beukes a few years ago. He also owned the Mfuwe Croc farm, but has been a magageing partner of Tanzania Trackers, for several years, and had nothing to do with Lower Lupande even back then. I would be interested to know if the bad guy is someone I know, as I know several of the PHs who have hunted both concessions over the years.

None of this has anything to do with Peter Chipman, Cowan, or Sarge, however, as they are as honest as the day is long. I've been thinking about doing another Buffalo hunt with Chipman myself!

We are there for 10-12 days. Our contract specifies 10 days with an option for the extra two. We are after buff, hippo, crocodile, puku, waterbuck, zebra, and just possibly a leopard(thus the extra two day option). We are open for lagitimate trophies. We are talking with Wes Hixon about a 21 day safari for '07. I stll want an over 42" buff which is why we booked the longer buff hunt. We will hunt buff on every trip. I really want a super buff. I love the hunt and will be happy with what I am able to shoot but there is that magical BIG BUFF that everyone is really looking for and I am willing to continue the pursuit.

The outfitter was Alex Walker, I Hunted this area in 97 and it was ok then, I just got back from the nymapala area and it has 10 times as much game as the lower lupande in my limited experience.

I too will be following IB404 and Donato to Lower Lupande with with Peter Chipman. For various reasons, my group will be hunting out of the Tundwe Lodge. Anyone have knowledge of this location? Does Peter usually hunt out of the Kafunta lodge, or a separate hunt camp?

bt, Peter's hunting camp is a tented camp in the middle of the concession along the Luangwa. There was a photo-lodge along a very scenic stretch of river, I THINK in the northern part of the concession (River was on our left). This is different then the Kafunta Lodge which was awesome...but full of tourists which could be uncomfortable for both, IMHO. Peter used this other lodge on occasion when the main camp was full or reserved by clients (much to the delight of the owner and camp manager). The new Zambian owners were fixing the pool and doing other work, as the camp was in need of some freshening up. I'm assuming this is the one you are talking about, AND things can change. Give me a call tomorrow and I'll be happy to tell you all that I know. Regards, Bill

Here are two pictures of Peter's hunting camp along the Luangwa River. They rebuild this camp each year, although the grass huts are on concrete slabs. It was an extremely well-kept and crisp camp.

Half of the dining area and bar is on the right in this picture (note Peter reading my Man Magnum at the table):

The sleeping quarters are enormous, with twin double beds, private shower and flush toilets:

This is the photo lodge I was referring to in the previous post (not Kafunta):

Pictures were taken in September when it was a bit dry.

For those of you not around last year, there's a hunt report at ---> Zambia Hunt Report
