I have spoken with the outfitter who run the first hunting operation in Uganda ( see the last SCI safari magazine). Seems like an adventure, but not very espensive about 8000/9000 us for a plains game week of hunt. Ther'are some very interesting species and seems they have some very good trophies.

$8000 - $9000 USD sounds pretty high to me for a 7 day plains game hunt.

Bwanamich, of course you're right. I guess I was just reacting to the typical plains game package offered by many outfitters - warthog, impala, blue wildebeest, duiker, Smiler etc.. No sable, roan or the like. I wonder what endemic species are found in Uganda?

of course my comment is about an east africa plains game hunt.In Tanzania you spend the double.
The species available are:
East Africa Eland, defassa waterbuck, topi, nile bushbuck, oribi, e.b. reedbuck, b. zebra, e.a. grey duiker, impala, warthog bushpig.
Ther'are interesting species but no Sable or Roan. A buffalo hunt is more days: 10 or 12; and is about 15.000.

The outfitter in Uganda is Game Trails Safaris and they do not have any webiste. I do have all of the details though for anyone interested in hunting there. As of now it is only some plains game, buffalo and hippo that can be hunted, but this is likely to change for next year as they are in the process of going to CITES to try to get Leopard on quota as well. Hunting can be done year round in Uganda, but the best months are June-October, but one can hunt any month as rain is not any big issue in this area. We still have a couple of dates left open for this year in November, and some dates left open for 2008 as of now.

Here are the options they offer.

7-Day Plains Game Safari
1x1 Daily rate $4,200
2x1 Daily Rate $3,500
3x1 Daily Rate $2,975
4x2 Daily Rate $2,625

Park Entrance Fee $300
Export permit $200
Veterinary certificate $65
gun permit and hunting license $175
Trophy prep/dip/pack $400

Extra Costs: trophy fees and license fees for animals, shipping of trophies and of course travel.

Animals allowed on 7-days:
Eland
Defassa Waterbuck
Zebra
Topi
Bushbbuck
Warthog
Bushpig
Baboon
Oribi
Duiker
E.A. Impala

Note: there is a license fee and tropy fee per animal. License fees have to be paid upfront before safari, but will be refunded at end of safari for any animals not taken.

12-Day Buffalo, Hippo and Plains Game
1x1 Daily Rate $12,600
Park Entrance Fee $300
Export permit $200
Veterinary certificate $65
gun permit and hunting license $175
Trophy prep/dip/pack $400

Total $13,740

Animals available would be the same plains game listed above plus Buffalo and Hippo.

The area that Game Trails hunts is called Lake Kachira and they are the only outfitter licensed to operate or hunt in Uganda. It is a tented safari camp which sits on the shore of Lake Kachira.

Due to the political instability, Uganda closed hunting in the late 1970's. Recently, the Ugandan Wildlife Authority initiated a pilot project based on sustainable off-take of wildlife in the Lake Kachira area, bordered by Lake Mburo National Park. This pilot project is a community based sustainable use program that looks to benifit local communities receiving revenue for numerous community development projects. Wildlife numbers have rebounded substantially over the term of the project, this in part due to the local communities realizing the economic benifit of protecting the wildlife.

Game Trails Uganda Ltd. is owned and operated by Swaram Kaka Matama. Kaka has been involved in the Ugandan wildlife industry for nearly 40 years; first as a PH, then as an honorary game warden. With the assistance of the Ugandan Wildlife Authority and local communities, Kaka started the pilot project in 2001.

Hope this information is of help to those of you interested in maybe going to Uganda. I have personally been to Uganda many times and it is a beautiful country which has come a long way since the Edi Amin days. Winston Churchill described Uganda as "The Pearl of Africa." I remember very well those days or years when I was living on the shores of Lake Victoria in Tanzania and when we were in the war in the late 1970's. I remember the Tanzania Russian Migs flying over our house late evenings and 15 minutes later you would hear and see all of the explosions from the bombs that they had just dropped on Entebe. The Miggs would come over the lake so low they would break some windows with the high noise. Was a little hard sleeping some nights! Sorry for the story, but memories I will never forget since we are on the topic of Uganda.

Ted Gorsline who posts here is involved in Uganda, he sent me some maps, info etc and has the info you need, references etc.

perhaps try PM him....

Oh yes, I have done some paddling there in 2003. Only saw a smallish region of the country but it was fantastic. Lots of otptimism and very friendly people.

Many of the foreigners I met there (LOTS!) were trying to re-new contracts, start business and somehow stay there, they were loving it...

Kayaker, I can assure you that for now there is NO other person or outfitter Legally licensed or allowed to operate in Uganda. Game Trails is the only one licensed and legally allowed to operate. If anyone says they are operating in Uganda right now, it is not true!

Also, with the informatiion I posted above just for a mattter of interest the Bushbuck that is hunted is the Nile Bushbuck and do not know of any other outfitter in Africa that can offer this specie.

Game Trails is in the process right now trying to get another area which borders Tanzania which will also give them Statungga, Ugandan Kob.

Hi Adam,
The info is from Game Trails, I don't think he operates there, but may be involved somehow (agent? Friends? Dunno!)

Eitherway, I guess it would be better for him to answer!

Adam,

Very interesting for anyone who remembers Idi Amin and the reports of him in the 1970's. Just recently re-visited in the movie "The Last King of Scotland". Thanks for the comments of your personal history.

Is there a trophy fee price list to accompany your info above. Thanks.

Ted seems to have been banned on AR. Or else he forgot how to use his computer.
