Poachers kill elephants at wildlife conservancy

Suspected poachers have killed several elephants at Namnyak and Sarara wildlife conservancies in Wambaa and Waso divisions of Samburu District.

An official, Tom Letiwa, said Kenya Wildlife Service rangers found some of the elephants without tusks. He blamed poaching in Samburu, Isiolo, Marsabit, Laikipia and Meru North districts on illegal firearms.

Letiwa said most of the firearms were brought from neighbouring countries. He appealed to the Government and KWS to deploy more security personnel to crack down on poachers.

Meanwhile, the local District Commissioner Julius Mathenge yesterday appealed to Parliament to amend the Wildlife Act. He said this would address human/wildlife conflict.

Speaking in his office, Mathenge said compensation for families of those killed or maimed by wild animals was too little. He was speaking as he handed over cheques worth Sh297, 000 to victims of wildlife attacks.

Those who had lost their loved ones received Sh30,000, while the injured got between Sh2, 000 and Sh15000.
