Mozambique Hunting Camp Target of Armed Robbery Attempt

(posted August 25, 2016)

Marromeu Safaris' camp in Coutada 10 of Mozambique was attacked by armed robbers the evening of Sunday, August 21. The PHs briefly exchanged gunfire with the thieves, who ran off when confronted. At least one of the perpetrators was armed. Five clients were in the camp at the time and one was injured in the calf by a ricocheted bullet. He was evacuated by helicopter the next morning. The would-be robbers escaped but are being pursued by government forces.

A statement issued by Marromeu Safaris to The Hunting Report said, "Due to the swift action and professional way the PHs and camp staff handled this situation, the incident lasted only minutes. The Minister of Terra, Ambiente e Desenvolviemento Rural (Land, Environment and Rural Development) gave his full support with the authorities. They are taking this incident very seriously, and we expect positive results very soon."

The wounded client was treated at a hospital for a flesh wound and was well enough to fly back home via commercial airliner. No one else was injured. The other clients were also evacuated as a safety precaution.

"This is the first incident of this kind in our camp since this coutada began operating in the late 90s," said Linda Ferreira of Marromeu Safaris. According to Ferreira, they have consulted a professional security advisor and plan to intensify security measures in the area.

It seems this was an isolated incident with simple robbery as the motive. We hope to have more details and an update for you in the October issue of The Hunting Report as our September issue has already gone to print. - Barbara Crown, Editor-in-Chief

I wonder which camp this is in Coutada 10? When I hunted there in 2008 Bahati Adventures shared the concession with another RSA outfitter whose name escapes me. They had separate camps and areas. This was truly wild Africa then. Too bad things are sliding downhill now.

These POS robbers must have thought they were robbing a photo safari camp. Even the dumbest of the dumb should know better than to try to rob armed hunters who know how to hit what they aim at. Too bad the PH's didn't shoot every one of them.

Morons!

May be he did not mean to hit any??

Many years ago we saw some tracks which we thought were poachers, and we got talking about it.

What happens if they see us and start shooting at us?

I said I will shoot back.

Walter said we have no business shooting at poachers??!!

I said I have no wish to have a fire fight with anyone, but if they start shooting at us I will shoot back, and I am shooting to hit whoever is shooting at us!

There is no way in hell I will be a victim if I can fight back!

There is really no difference in Africa between government forces, insurgent forces, poachers and bandits. To quote Wambaugh they are as interchangeable as widgets.

Now, with the hint of another terror campaign in Mozambique (which I don't believe will become widespread) a lot of opportunistic thieves ate going to come out of the woodwork.

I do know that some parties with the right skill sets are exploring the possibility of adopting a PMC-type approach to the problem.

Word has it that this is related to Renamo forces. And is becoming more frequent to target hunting camps looking for money and guns and supplies.

I agree with Saeed. I am not going to sit back and not protect myself in a life endangering situation, no matter where I am at. We also ran into some armed poachers in the Zambezi Valley a few years back, at which time my PH sent some shots over their heads. I believe that they may have set a world record in the 400 meters for getting their asses out of there. Big Grin

When my wife and I hunted the lower Zambezi Valley in 2012, Gibbo told us about an incident that had happened earlier that year. They had discovered an active poachers' camp. They withdrew, and the game scout summoned a few of his mates and assaulted the camp. I believe that there were 5 poachers, at least one was killed outright, and one wounded. The followup on the wounded poacher yielded his few remains along with evidence of a lion feast. Just desserts, if you will pardon the pun! Perhaps Dave Fulson or others connected with Chifuti can flesh out the story. I remember thinking at the time that I was sorry I missed it.

Not mine to tell but the real story is far more dramatic. Guys are lucky to be alive.

Tim, I believe that three were killed in that encounter. Weston, my game scout, was one of the government scouts on that mission. They didn't wait till all 5 came though, they just opened fire on the three that were there.

Considering the large sums of cash often found on clients or outfitters, I am surprised this doesn't happen more often.

In the US, the PHs might have been charged for firing back.

I had a big rant on here, but I have learned over the years that there are always people on AR that try and see the negative side of your view and high light their un-informed views on that.

So here is a brief summary of how I feel and what I know to be a fact.

That camp was attacked by Renamo Rebels. Not poachers or mere robbers. I warned against this last year and again this year.

Go to Niassa, go to Sabie, go to Gaza, go to Tete. But be warned, central Mozambique is in a De Facto state of Civil war.

If you think I am paranoid, do a search on Google. There are a mediation team negotiating a ceasefire. That does not happen when someone play cops and robbers........
