Just out of interest and FYI Mozambique did EXACTLY the same exercise on July 1st they removed three zeros from their currency. So it seems some African countries have the answer to the problem of inflation and are much more clued up than our fools in the west (-: All they do in Africa is delete zeros ... and print money at will when they need to pay their civil servants SO why do we in the west pay our Reserve Bank Governers a (small fortune in wages) to manipulate the interest rate and remove say .25 of a % each time, when the Zimbabawe chap GONO just deletes zeros at will !!! Why do we piss around with small figures and not follow the Africans Cheers Peter

Ganyana, It has been some time since the official devaluation. Please give us an update on realistic expectations of how many Zim $ a good old US $ will now buy (i) on the balck market and (ii) officially. Then give me some perspective: What does a local beer in an average pub cost in Zim $? Thanks, Andrew McLaren.

Andrew Who knows what the black market rate is doing. Somewhere arround 560 KD's to 1US$ (ie Z$560,000:1) but little trading and a massive shortage of chash. ATM's not working yet, banks not accepting many cheques, fuel in very short supply and road blocks searching for cash at every turn. Police looked through the truck today, lifed two shotguns and 1000rnds of ammo out of the way looking for cash but didn't ask about licenses or even why so much ammo. Things will start to stabnilise after the 21'st when we get dowwn to using only one currency (ie New dollars or KD's and the police stop confiscating all cash over 100 million that they can find.
