If your 300 WM shot all these 180 gr. bullets equally well, which would you take for a SA plains game hunt - Sierra Pro Hunter - Hornady Interlock - Remington Core Lokt? Or would you reject all those and take a premium bullet (Nosler or A Frame) that was not quite as accurate?

Nosler Partitions, or A-frames ! ![]()

Palmer, I'd take the premium bullet, A-Frame, Partition, Trophy Bonded, or Barnes XLC that shot the best. I'd take a 2" shooter with a premium bullet over a .5 MOA with the others any day!

Palmer Woodleigh or nosler partition, will do anything you ask them to and are bit less costly than the others ![]() / JOHAN

I'd take the Partition or A-frame. I don't think the other 3 are dependable enough for deep penetration at 300 Mag speeds.

I'd take a premium bullet. I had heard good things about the Hornandys on elk so on my first plains game hunt I loaded the 225gr spitzer into the 388 WM. The first animal I took was a kudu angling away, the bullet went in just behind the last rib. We found bits and pieces of that bullet and it didn't make it to the lungs. I feel fortunate to recovered that kudu. Second time I loaded Barnes X. Was much happier with the results. The only bullet recovered was on a 125 yard shot on a bull oryx. Broke both shoulders and 3 of 4 "petals" still intact just under the off shoulder hide. Don't think I would have gotten similar performance with the Hornadys (IMHO). BigBullet

Thanks for the replies. Somehow I was afraid you would say that. Guess I will head back to the range and give the ticks and chiggers another chance to do me in.

I would opt for a Norma 200 grn Oryx. They shoot awesome out of my 300 Win Mag. ![]()

Slightly better accuracy with the standard bullets is no bargain at all when compared to the greater reliability and deeper penetration (especially at 300 WM speeds) of the premium bullets.

The Norma uses the A frame and I find them a bit "hard" for plains game, they dont mushroom on thin skinned game. Id go for the heaviest premium bullet you can load for your caliber and my choice wood be Woodleigh. ![]()

Palmer -- Let me make a suggestion. Use 180 grain North Forks and have as good accuracy as the mentioned bullets. ![]()

palmer the Northforks are about the most accurate bullet I know of... They are as good as a Nosler..they expand better than a Nosler but a Nosler will out penitrate them..

I've used the old Hornady I-lock 180gr flat base for years in my 300. Taken everything from Barbary Sheep to Waterbuck with it. Best bullet I know for the price. I took a Kudu at 30' with this bullet. Took him on the point of the shoulder (only tunnel thru the brush I had) and dropped him after a 30yd death run. Bullet recovered, intact, under hide, after passing thru near side shoulder heavy bones & taking out the boiler room. Couldn't weigh the bullet, lost it in the shuffle around hunting camp. My favorite PH uses 175gr hornadys in his 7x57 with excellent results. You won't regret using the old I-lock. Course, when you're spending $6k to hunt why are we quibbling about $.06 for bullets.

I think Pancho's and Big Bullet's posts offer good food for thought. Poncho alludes that his PH loves the 175gr Hornadys in his 7X57, yet BB's 225gr Hornady broke up. I had a 180gr Hornady fall apart on an impala at 80 yards out of a 300 Weatherby. I dropped him on the spt, but I recovered only the core a bit of lead. The key here is velocity. At sppeds under 2700 fps, the Hornady id a great bullet, but like another poster brought up, on an expensive hunt of a lifetime, why quibble about the cost of ammo? jorge

Thanks for the information. Im going to load up the Northforks but plan on taking a box or two of Sierra's for varmints.

Its all a matter of preference. The ammo is about the cheapest part of the hunt so why not nail the varmints with premium bullets? You proably wont have much time to switch ammo anyway.
