Mozambique Critters?

Hello all,

I'm considering my second safari. On the first, I went to South Africa for plains game and took a black wildebeest, blue wildebeest, impala, blesbok, springbok, gemsbok, steenbok and a blackback jackal.

I heard about a hunting opportunity in northern Mozambique and was curious if anyone can tell me what animals roam that region? I'd ask the outfitter, but he's traveling now and I'm waiting for him to get back home.

Ho Shof,

Welcome to the forum

There's some great hunting in Mozambique but it does have it's problems. Notably more than it's fair share of dodgy operators and agents etc.

The good news is that you have some great and reliable Mozambique outfitters who post right here on the forum.

Johan Strasheim of Bahati Safaris posts here under the name of Bahati and who has Coutada 10 would be a very good place to start.

You might also like to visit www.shakariconnection.com as part of your research. I'm sure you'll find it helpful.

Welcome to AR

What province? Niassa, Cabo Delgado or Tete
What is the main target?

Cheers

I would have mentioned Freischuetz as another of the good operators but I couldn't remember how to spell Freischuetz! Wink

Anyway, he's also one of the good guys as is Walter Enslin.

Thanks for the welcome. I've lurked for a while, but never really had anything to ask or comment on.

I'm probably going to sound like a complete idiot, but for the life of me, I can't remember which province! All I remember is that he said northern Mozambique. I was so focused on the thought of dangerous game that I never got around to asking him exactly where we'd be going. I figured that would come with future conversations.

I'm going to begin working on my Big Six, probably with a cape buffalo and hippo. But I'd like to also hunt some plains game and was wondering what other critters were roaming the northern Mozambique area?

Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for. I looked on the internet, but I couldn't find that list.

I understand that some of these animals might be regional in distribution and not in the province I'm looking to hunt. But now I can go through the list and ask more informed questions.

Thanks.

That's a big help! I've got that marked so I can reference it when I talk more.

Thanks!

Tony T and his son in law Jason Van Aarde are two top class guys who run a top class operation and are 110% reliable.

There's a few dodgy buggers operating up there, and seemingly more than normal this year, but Tony T and Jason are also on my list of top drawer people along with the aforementioned Johan Strasheim, Walter Enslin and Freisch something or other!. Smiler

Nope, haven't really done anything yet. I just want to educate myself more on Mozambique so that I can ask intelligent questions.

When I booked my trip to South Africa, I didn't even know what questions to ask, which left me somewhat at the mercy of the outfitter.

Does anyone know for sure if it's legal to hunt leopard and cape buffalo with archery equipment in Mozambique? I know two guys that want to do it. Me personally, I would like to hunt cape buffalo with a bow but I'm not so sure about leopard.

I was close to booking a safari to bowhunt capes in South Africa but was told recently by a different outfitter that regulations had been changed recently that prohibited archery hunts for cape buffalo in South Africa.

Tony will know archery regs:
" As author of far-reaching research on bow hunting in Africa, he is regarded as an authority in this field. "
