Alaskan Brown Bear vs. African Lion
A ten year old girl at the school I sub at killed a huge brown bear on the peninsula. It stands about 12 feet tall and the taxidermist used three foam bears to get the size to fit the skin. Estimated weight was close to a ton. A big lion would weigh 1/4th of this amount.
With that ratio, I would bet on the bear. After all, I'm 220 pounds and can kick the crap of any and all 55 pounders I know. LOL.

I remember reading some time ago about such shows that were put up the early 1900s in the US. The surprise was the speed and ease with which the grizzly killed the lions.

In Siberia the tigers which weigh 650 lbs+ regularly kill brown bears and eat them.

In India the tigers weigh 500 lbs and they kill sloth bears as well as Himalayan black bears - both are smaller but very aggressive.

there is no official report of an amur adult brown bear been killed by a an amur tiger. there is reports of amour tiger killed by adult brown bear male.

in the nature both are trying to avoid any encounter there is certainly a reason.

i ve seen grizzly not an huge brown bear moving a dead moose.

i ve seen lions taking buffalo but never alone, and it was not a cape buffalor but in CAR.

the weight of yukon moose is not that small ...

This may be stupid and way off topic, but I'm a dog man. Could a wolf hang with a leopard at all? I believe wolves hunt in packs, but they seem to be the most aggressive canines and I'm just curious with all of these hypotheticals.

I am amazed this is even a debate. Grizzly vs. Lion is pretty obviously going to yield the Griz coming out on top. Frankly, I think even a really good sized black bear would likely come out on top if the lion insisted on a fight.

No. Wolves 80-140lbs. Adult male leopard 125-180lbs. Lone leopard 100% bad ass. Lone wolf not so much.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

No contest. My money's on the bear! As a really big Alaskan brownie is reportedly 1000 to 1200+ lbs; A BIG brown bear or Grizzly whips the largest (550 lb) lion every time! (would be nearly like george foreman vs Mayweather) A much better match-up would be a large (500 lb) black bear, or grizzly vs the lion. That might be at best (for the lion) a draw.

Its not just about size either....IMO: Bears are just plain f#@&*g tougher!

Here is an very interesting (albeit sad) link:

Shows what really happened in a match of 700 lb grizzly & African lion....

Ah, but remember the one fighter Foreman said when he was doing his comeback that he wouldn't go up against? Hint - he was a lot smaller.

Btw, how about bear vs bear? Brown bear vs. polar bear? I've heard polar bears have only one reason to approach a person, to eat them. Now that's attitude for you...

...reading the link, it says the lion hit its head on the steel cage, and became disoriented for minute
and in that time the bear failed to go on the attack....and there was no ultimate fight to the death.
It seems the bear didn't have the brains[ or instincts] to put his apparent strength advantage, to full & proper offensive use.

Seems the answer to this depends on the circumstances.

What are their motivations?

Assuming the bear doesn't see the lion first, and the lion's max size, hasn't eaten in a week and is obsessed with making a meal of the bear. What then?

Then assume the bear is defending her cubs. What then?

This could have different outcomes.

Btw, regarding the earlier reference here to George Foreman...he said during his comeback that the one guy he would not agree to fight was Mike Tyson, who was really in size just barely a heavyweight. But Tyson, pound for pound, imo in his prime could have taken any heavyweight.

So, size ain't all.

Our local mt lions regularly hammer lone wolves. Bioligists here report there have been 5 confirmed collared wolves killed by cats. I don't believe a north american mt lion is any match for a leopard.
