Buffalo Skull - Interesting Pics!

From my Charisa - Zimbabwe hunt last month.

Phillip finally sent me some pictures of the buffalo skull, from the bull that charged us and was hell bent on eating poor Phil. After seeing the skull up close, I was totally amazed that the bull managed to stay on his feet, after being hit through the top of the head with the .577NE - 750gr CEB Non-Con.

As I tried to explain in my report, but I think the pics do a much better job. This illustrates how low to the ground the bull's head was, at the time I fired the first shot. Thankfully the bull decided he had enough after this shot hit him, but he amazingly stayed on his feet through another .577NE to the shoulder (broadside), and for another 20 yards or so.

Pic taken from the camp pool.

The ele/buff I took with Phil on this hunt. I'm leaving the skull and tusks at his camp, so he can decorate the camp with a couple of trophies.

Aaron - those Nyati don't mind venting their heads - here is a pic of mine - as you can see (under its left horn - just where horn meets the skull) this one was sporting a 1/2 " thick and 3" long stick for years to keep the hole vented or to scratch the brain matter itself Smiler...he was live and kicking atm - still very cheeky...

Aaron, you need Will's book..."Braining the Buffalo". You must have missed the brain, as you didn't consult his diagrams. :-)

Heck, even if I had Will's book taped to my forehead, not sure it would have done me any good? I figured I made a pretty good shot, considering I was aiming over my shoulder, and running like hell in the opposite direction Smiler By the time I figured out what was going on, I knew the pro had it under control, and I was of little use!

I'll tell ya this though, that damn .577 has a lot of muzzle jump when you're only holding it with one hand!

Next time just sit down with old Dagga boy, review the pertinent sections of Will's book with him to make sure he understands, let him choose how he wants to die and then ... have at it beer

True! But considering it was over-the-shoulder, at a target I was not even looking at, one handed, and it kept Phil from getting eaten, I'll take it. Cool

The hole you see was going right into the brain cavity. The mentioned stick was imbeded in the hole and was protruding through the skin under the horn (see pic).

We didn't know it atm - the only indicator was considerable polished left horn according to the right one.

Hole was pointed out and stick handed over by skinner before boiling.

So yes - this poor creature was actually living with a hole in the head + a stick that was tickling the brain occasionaly...no wonder he charged instantly...spooky hey?
