As fashionable as it is sometimes to bash SCI, truth is that SCI and its Chapters do good work that often goes unnoticed:

For the fourth consecutive year SCI Houston in partnership with the Star of Hope Mission helped to feed almost 300 of Houston’s homeless community on Wednesday, December 7.  In what has become an annual event, local hunters and members of SCI Houston not only volunteered their time to help prepare and serve the evening meal on the 7th but also donated more than 350 pounds of venison hamburger to prepare the meal.  In addition, SCI Houston made a cash donation of $2500 to assist the Star of Hope in carrying out its important mission in our community.  Since 2013, SCI Houston has contributed $10,000 to support the Star of Hope’s mission and donated almost 1000 pounds of venison to help feed the homeless.

Since 1989, Safari Club International and its local chapters have sponsored the Sportsmen Against Hunger program through the SCI Foundation.  The program is aimed at partnering with local food banks and institutions like the Star of Hope to allow hunters to share a portion of their wild game harvest with those in need in the community.

It is good to see things like this especially around Christmas. The only thing I would change is the use of the words "homeless" and "hunger" to more inviting ones.

Excellent to see, Mike. It's amazing to see how far these food banks and foundations can make a dollar stretch. That $2500 will provide a lot of meals.

I'm hoping this is in jest and you don't imply he should call them calorically-deficient urban outdoorsmen? Am I missing why we should make homelessness and hunger seem more "inviting?"

Brandon, the Star of Hope says they can provide a meal for a homeless person for about $1.90 . . . so that $10,000 translates into more than 5000 meals.

How about "those in need" or something like that?

People who live in cardboard boxes, in alleyways, under bridges, etc. qualify as homeless and are also known to rummage in dustbins for food (hungry).

This is fact and the US has its fair share of "homeless and hungry" people so why try to hide facts?

Hats off to Houston for their gesture; the more fortunate (like you George) ought to maybe consider donating some cash to the Chapter to be used specifically for this occasion.

Well done. I am certain it is appreciated by many.

As part of our humanitarian mission, SCI Acadiana Chapter donated $10,000 to flood victims through the Community Foundation of Acadiana. 100% of the donated money went to help people. The CFA takes no money to operate from these donations.

So much of this Chapter work is just unknown, a real pity. Good job.

Just the way charity and outreach ought to be.

At a time when hunting and hunters suffer from serious negative public image issues, a little dose of the positive side of hunting would not seem to be a bad idea. As they say, if you don't toot your own horn, nobody will. But I can certainly understand the perspective that charity comes from the heart and therefore acknowledgement of it should not be a motivation.

Good job Mike. An interesting parallel to note is that that my little project contributes $20,000 in meat to the needy per annum. All operators here are obliged to donate 80% of the game meat product to the attached community and the current market value must equal a couple of hundred thousand dollars.

In Bangweulu swamps the meat is distributed to the aged and infirm who are registered with the operator.

Well done...Local SCI chapters have always done good work like this. Even if you disagree with the national chapter please try and support your local.

Well done to the Houston Chapter Mike.

Nice job and kudos to Houston SCI, and you, too, Mike, for personally joining the effort.

I have found that Texans are among the most generous of people.

When I recently bought a nonresident Texas hunting license, I was impressed to see that I could voluntarily contribute extra amounts to help our veterans and also to help feed the hungry.

We need to see more of that in our country. tu2
