Are these better built than the 550s? Are they a decent gun? It would be nice to be able to get a 505 gibbs, etc w.o. waiting for it to be built...

Basically they are the same gun with different stock. There is a post in the Big Bore forums about feeding problems with the CZ 505 Gibbs. You might want to check it out for the info.

I have a 550 Safari Classic in 375 H&H and am very happy with it. As far as fit and finish, there is no comparison between the 550 American and the Safari Classic.

I believe the 550 American is stocked in the US and needs a lot of work. The floor plate on one I looked at required a lot of force just to close it. Removing a 1/16" of wood should solve that problem.

I have one in .404 Jeffery and at this point I am one unhappy customer. When you pay more than $2000 for a rifle you expect the darn thing to feed -- this one doesn't -- and to shoot -- this one doesn't. It will feed from the right side of the magazine but not the left, regardless of the ammo. When you shoot it it fails to stabilize the bullets with resulting keyholes. I plan to ship it back to CZ and withhold final judgment until I get it back, but there have got to be some serious quality control issues to have your "top of the line" model leave the factory with these sorts of problems. Very, very disappointing.

The standard CZ 550 Magnum in 458 has served me well. I am uncertain that the 450 Rigby and 404 Jeffrey are make in Europe. I know the 458 Lott is converted in US from 458 Won Mag. The Lott feeds well, but the larger case of the 505 and 404 need different follower and magazine work... could they just be using the regular set up for these???

Sorry to hear of the problems... dangerous game rifles have to be utterly reliable.

Mike,

Please keep us updated on what happens, I was thinking about buying a CZ 404 Jeffery, but have had my doubts.

Shipping it back today with letters to Alice Poluchova, CZ's President and Mike, their Master Gunsmith. Just wanted them to know how disappointing it is to pay good money for a custom shop rifle that will not do something as basic as feed. Particularly, a DGR. Hopefully, they can get it taken care of. It is a beautiful rifle and I love the feel of the CZ's, but alot of good that will do me when I am staring down a bull elephant and the rifle jams.

Mike,

Good Luck with CZ!

They were very helpful when I sent my .404 back, probably for many of the same reasons.

When they could not fix it to my satisfaction ["They are all that way" "That's the way they were designed" " The stocks were made by a computer, they must be correct"].

They returned all my money.

Know that you are not alone, I believe that many of these have gone back to CZ.

I've read all the posts about the "CZ's" I just don't get why so many people like them. My son and others have had lots of problems getting them "right". By the time you do it seems you have alot more $ in them then they're worth. I recognize its a solid action by reputation from knowledgable people. Why not just build a semi-custom rifle from the action? Just my opinion and I could be wrong.

I second that. I have been looking for one to go along with my 9.3 (which is excellent). This news is a little unnerving. Let us know how it turns out please.

I have previously posted about my experience with the CZ 404 Jeffery. I waited a few months for it. The finish on the metal looked crappy- pebbley texture, a large and wide scrape on the barrel, the safety could not be moved without exerting about all pressure I could, nearlly cutting my thumb.

The action was very rough. I asked the shop to return it to CZ for repairs or replacement. CZ rufused to do anything with the rifle and told the shop that if I didn't want the rifle, they had plenty of other people who did.

So maybe you got the rifle I refused. I considered it a piece of junk.
