larrys01Min. Legal Cal. for Leopard
What is the minimum legal cal. for hunting Leopard in south africa. Is it the .375 or is a .30 cal. legal?

L. David KeithI shot my last one with a .280 w/160 gr Accubonds. Shot placement is key as with all dangerous game. Main concern is accuracy and a good expanding bullet. Even a .416 won't kill a Leopard if you do not hit it in the vitals.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

larrys01So, your saying the .280 is a legal Cal. for Leopard in SA?

Big Game HunterI shot my last one with a .257 WBY. It was dead under the tree.
A PH that I booked lots of hunts for prefers a small caliber for leopards compared to a big caliber. He has killed lots of leopards and he has only had three dead under the tree. One was with a .243 (his personal cat), .257 WBY (mine)m and a .375 Ultra-mag. (it was shot in the spine) All the rest were shot with a .300 mag up to a .458 Lott and they have all run after the shot.
As stated above, shot placement is far more important that the caliber and bullet.

Big Game HunterSouth Africa
• Most provinces do not have a minimum equipment requirement for rifle hunting and rely on common sense.
• Some provinces require a minimum of .375 caliber for dangerous or big game hunting.
• No provinces require a minimum energy (Eo - muzzle velocity) for calibers used.

L. David KeithAs Judge says, each country has its own set of rules, but those can change with the wind, or depend upon who you ask. Charl keeps a keen eye on such things Larry, I would ask him what's the current minimum.
Cheers,
David
