Dear Travel Partner:

South African Airways is pleased to announce its third North American gateway with new services between Chicago and Johannesburg, beginning in May 2007. The flight between Chicago and Johannesburg will operate four days per week, with a brief stop in Dakar, Senegal. South African Airways will utilize the Airbus A340-600 aircraft, which accommodates 42 Premium Business Class and 275 Economy passengers. Chicago-O’Hare is the largest hub of our Star Alliance partner, United Airlines and will offer seamless connections from over 90 cities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico to Africa. Attached, for your reference is a press release announcing the new service from Chicago.

In addition to the new Chicago service, South African Airways will also introduce nonstop service from New York-JFK to Johannesburg in May 2007. The decision to operate nonstop service from New York-JFK to Johannesburg is a result of the overwhelming success of our new nonstop service from Washington, DC to Johannesburg that started in October 2006.

Government approval by the U.S. Department of Transportation is required on this new service, before the flights can be published and sold through the GDS. Approval is anticipated to be granted within the next few weeks, so we will advise you when these flights will be available for sale. With the announcement of the nonstop service from New York-JFK to Johannesburg, we will be discontinuing the service from New York-JFK to Dakar, Senegal. We realize that you may have some passengers already booked and ticketed on this flight, for travel May 8th and beyond, and we will work to reaccommodate them with minimal disruption to their travel schedules. We are in the process of developing our reaccommodation policy for Dakar customers and will communicate that information as it becomes available.

With service from New York, Washington, DC and Chicago, South African Airways offers the fastest and most comfortable way to travel to South Africa. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to the pleasure of serving your clients on our award-winning flights.

Sincerely,

Your South African Airways Sales Team

500grains,

I think the gun theft problem has subsided, at least no new news on it that I have heard. I have not had any problems nor have any of my friends I have flown with out of ORD had problems with theft.

Customs can at times can be slow to clear although on my last couple of trips it was very fast.

Kathy,

Great news for us in Chicago.

I just came back from South Africa and was routed from Dulles to O'Hare before my final destination. I did not have any problems.

500 Grains,

Cops say man stole ammo at O'Hare
Suspect not linked to thefts of guns from airport luggage

December 3, 2006
BY FRANK MAIN Crime Reporter
Police investigating a string of guns missing from luggage at O'Hare Airport have arrested a man for allegedly stealing a bag containing ammunition.

Thomas Goodman, 52, of Chicago, was charged with misdemeanor theft after plainclothes officers saw him steal the bag from a United Airlines carousel on Thanksgiving Day, said Michael Patton, the Chicago Police commander at O'Hare. Police have not tied Goodman to a string of at least 10 guns stolen from luggage since Jan. 2, Patton said.

The bag belonged to a woman transporting the ammunition legally, Patton said. The woman also had a bag containing a gun, but Goodman did not take it, Patton said.

Police do not know how Goodman singled out the bag containing the ammunition, Patton said.

Airport worker Gerald Trebicki, 25, of Chicago, also was snared in police surveillance launched earlier this year because of the gun thefts. He was arrested Nov. 20 for allegedly stealing cases of beer and soda shipped on American Airlines, Patton said.

Both Goodman and Trebicki were charged with misdemeanor theft.

Patton said the gun-theft investigation is continuing, and no arrests have been made in connection with the missing weapons.

Five of 10 guns recovered
The guns were reported stolen from luggage checked through United Airlines, police said. Five of the weapons were later recovered in United's storage area. Most were pistols, but one was an M-4 assault weapon.
Among the theft victims were a Chicago Police officer, a soldier deploying overseas, a sailor and a soap opera star, police said. Earlier this year, two United employees were questioned in the gun thefts, police said.

In addition to the gun thefts, an off-duty Chicago Police officer reported 50 rounds of ammunition were missing from his suitcase Sept. 28. Two guns in his luggage were undisturbed, police said.

United has tightened security as a result of the investigation, police said.

About a dozen guns a day are checked in luggage through United at O'Hare. Gun owners must fill out a declaration form at the counter. A gun is placed in a locked, sealed box, and ammunition is placed in a separate box, Patton said. The boxes are then packed into luggage.

So, to answer 500 Grains' question, NO, they have not completely solved the gun theft problem involving BOTH United Airlines and the Chicago O'Hare Airport; neither of which I will frequent until they have done so. By the way, why is that ONLY MISDEMEANOR THEFT? Why not a FELONY, since it involves the theft of a firearm involved in interstate travel, or is that some Illinois quirk(Since they are one of the MOST gun-unfriendly jurisidictions in the Union)? I know the sinking and hopeless feeling of being told by the airlines and TSA that they suspected your rifles to have been stolen. I had that happen to me in Atlanta one year, on the way to Africa for Safari. However, I was fortunate to persist in investigating the whereabouts of my guns, and they "found" the rifles (a custom bolt action and my brand new double rifle) in Tampa Bay, Florida, and got them back to Atlanta before I flew out to Africa.

UEG, if I read the report correctly it says misdemeanor charges resulted on one guy stealing a bag containing ammunition and the other stole some beer and soft drinks. I didn't see where anybody has been charged with the theft of the firearms.

Don't know what the dollar value threshold is for larceny felony charges in Illinois but the state I am in it is generally $1000.

And remember this....these are media reports and they often don't have all the facts straight.

I was just on the SAA Web and a flight from Washington to Johannesburg and return was just over $1200 including all tax.
