I plan to explore around Gonarezhou Park in Zimbabwe, after hunting in Mozambique. I want to see the land/bush and history, not a hunting trip of course. I will hire a good guide and take a week. Has anyone done this? There some ancient sites over there.

Brian, I've hunted Malapati, which is just across the river from Gonarezhou, back when Nixon had the area. The Buff and Elephant would cross the mostly-dry riverbed into his area. He would take a 100 pounder every few years. The area has since been purchased by a "Greenie" group and closed to hunting. There must be some great animals to see in the park itself.

Yes, Thanks. That is one of the areas that I am interested in, including the Great Zimbabwe ruins. (iron age)
Must be some pretty interesting country over there. You are fortunate to have hunted there.

Brian,
Great plan. I have been going to go explore it myself. In fact it was on the books when COVID hit.

You will not be disappointed. PH Alan Davies a good friend of my best friend Nigel Theisen lives near. Alan at one time prior to Nixon had Malapati. Alan has shown me some impressive pics over the years.

Through my conservation side of life...I have come to know Hugo van der Westhuizen, the Frankfort Zoological Society manager of Gonarezhou—seems an outstanding fellow and I believe he manages the park well.

Stay the course and do this—good plan!!!

Thanks Lane, Very encouraging. I have read everything I could get on SE Zimbabwe from Crooks Corner to the Save. We like to just explore Africa for at least two weeks weeks after hunting, often employing an informed guide/historian/naturalist. Brian

I did this and it is well worth the effort. When there, swing north and see the Great Zimbabwe ruins.

Could not agree more. Did my first elephant hunt near there and wondered at the cliffs. If I recall the word means "the pink inside the elephant's mouth." Clive Stokil was PH with Horst Isselbacher outfitter.

Brian- what an adventure you are in for. I have a mate who is an excellent guide who ran his private camp and safaris in Gonas. He is still doing private tours if you keep his details are

Been there twice while hunting in the area lots of game best part the park has very few visitors. Saw some big tuskers and large groups of buffalos including a freak bull with 55” horns no boss.
Have a great time
