Got a question for all who have been to Africa for big game. Can you use a rifle that is ported?
This is probably a really stupid question but after my hunting buddy and I were talking to a PH from South Africa, he told us that new laws state that hunting rifles can not be ported. I laughed and his reponse was, "If you showed up w/a ported rifle, you won't hunt with it."
It blew my mind hearing this! Another hunting buddy of ours has a .416 Remington thats ported and the PH he was with in SA told him he couldn't hunt with it.
Has anyone heard of this?
Or are these PH's being a pain?

It is absolutely true.

The deafness police will seize any braked or ported rifles at customs.

I think that claims like this one are part of a plot among clever PHs to retain what little hearing they have left.

It's just a big flashing pink light, no siren.

A lot of PH's have been unnecessarily abused by clients shooting whopper high-vel magnums with brakes. Keep in mind that the PH walks in front of the client and usually just steps off to the side while the client shoots. Thus the PH experiences quite a bit of muzzle blast. And more from a ported/braked rifle.

But this is the first I heard of a law against it. That's probably just some b.s.

If you really need a brake to shoot well, then clear it with your PH before you book a hunt. But as a courtesy, some PH's will appreciate it if you hunt without a brake.

search for old strings here for; muzzle breaks

and then find another oufitter/PH that will let you shoot your rifle - whatever it is.

No such law, he is being a pain....Most everyone these days shows up with a muzzle brake...None of my RSA, Zim, Tanz, Mozambique, or botswana PHs turn down clients for a muzzle brake...

I have no problems with guiding my Deer and Antelope hunters with one, I can see it on the gun and take the necessary precautions, its not the big friggen deal some make out of it, just a bunch of whining IMO....

Thanks for all the info.
George:
Well, after finding out what the trophy fees are and also finding out about a "short" flight thats not included in the package price, we've decided to go w/another guide service.

Oh, forgot to mention....regarding muzzle breaks/ported rifles, my hunting buddy and I both have had shoulder surgery. Using a break or port (MagnaPort) does help w/the big boys.
