I just received the price list from Karoo Taxidermy in RSA and they quote flat skins at:

Blesbuck..........463 Rand...($51.25 USD)
Springbok.........463 Rand...($51.25 USD)
Wildebeest (Both).1,095 Rand.($121.67 USD)
Zebra.............1,685 Rand.($187.22 USD)

Right now it's 9.033 Rand to the dollar.

Thanks - the prices i have been quoted are way above that

SB $100
BB $110
Black W $230
Blue W $250
Zebra $510

This is pretty much what i would pay in the UK!! Do i argue or haggle or ask my Outfitter to take them to another company?

There are taxidermists and there are taxidermists. Dont jump to price as a measuring stick too soon.
If you give us the taxidermists name we can give you an indication of whether or not it is value for money.

Ian - I am not getting any taxidermy work done just dip and ship for the capes. I intended to get the tanning done as it is typically half the price of the UK.

The group are called African Wildlife Artistry'

I dont know them personally but they have a good reputation.
As with most things in life when they get popular the prices go up.

My guess would be that by the time you get the skins etc moved to another taxidermist you would have made up the difference between them and the better price options.
You also have the benefit of them being close to your outfitter.

If you do decide to change then I am sure you can do better on price.
My suggestion will be Highveld Taxidermy, they are not as cheap as some of the others, but the service will knock your socks off and the quality of the work is second to none.
I am sure some of the other outfitters on the site will also have people that they trust with their clients trophies.

There is nothing that kills a good relationship between outfitter and client faster than problems with trophies and or excess charges etc after the quote. That may also be why your outfitter has gone with his preferred supplier.

I hope you are mounting that Reedbuck, he is well worth it
Good luck
Ian

Speaking of tanneries, anyone know a good tannery in the States that would tan a buffalo hide into belt/holster leather? My taxidemmist says his tannery will only do what I would consider "bomber jacket" leather and I've got a ton of it.

I know Obummer is taxing tanning here in the US now thanks to the Obamacare thing. Roll Eyes
