MJinesTop Ten Things I Have Learned About Aussies
The Top Ten things I have learned about Aussies from sharing camp with them in Africa are . . .
10. A mate is not your spouse.
9. Profanity is considered an art form.
8. If you are late for appetizers, forget it.
7. If you go last through the food line, forget it.
6. If shooting once is good, shooting twice is great, three times even better, four times . . .
5. In a conversation, paying attention and listening closely, you will understand every seventh word.
4. From a steady diet of Fosters and rugby over the centuries, males in Aussie are at least 25% larger than their American counterparts (in stature that is).
3. Keep the liquor under lock and key.
2. Aussies enjoy a good cigar . . . and enjoy it even more if it is
your cigar.
And the Number One thing I have learned about Aussies from sharing camp with them in Africa is . . .
1. Aussies make damn fine company around the campfire.

Found the same to be true when visiting their country. Joyce and I hope to spend a six month period touring Oz after retirement.

Dutch44Mike:
I spent an evening with Dan and Alan as well. Don't forget:
1. When they run out of Jack or Vino your bottle is their bottle and your glasses are theirs as well.
2. Blasting at Boris is akin to their prowess at camels, roo's and anything else that moves in that vast expanse....as long as you're shooting out of a vehicle. Preferably a moving one.
3. They seem immune from hangovers as well.
4. A lot of fun to be with in the bush.

NakihunterYou missed one BIG point - they are intimidated by Kiwis! They really have this thing about those blokes from across the ditch that they cannot fathom.
Oh, and they really like their Shielas using sheep dip for perfume!

DCS MemberI've also learned that most people from the Southern Hemisphere have multiple livers. Said statement based upon many encounters with Southern Africans, Aussies, kiwis, Argentines, Exuadorians, etc. I feel like I need to check in to rehab after DSC every year thinking I can keep up. I don't know if the Coriolis Effect has anything to do with it, but the sample set proves true.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

CASTLE right now!

chuck375Met a lovely Aussie couple at "The Swan" pub in London, bordering the north side of Hyde Park. They and another British couple were trading the friendliest of barbs. The British couple said to the Aussies "We still don't understand why you Aussies don't speak proper English" I of coursce couldn't help myself and said, "Well I don't believe there were a lot of grammar courses on the prison ships" Which of course caused a lot of mirth and as both of them verbally took me apart we became even friendlier and have traded addresses and emails.
I've never met an Aussie I didn't like.

Chuck

lavacaI shared a camp with, an Aussie who lurks here occasionally, in North Eastern Namibia near Bushmanland. He was a fine bloke -- I believe is the word. I must say, we spent the first few days having difficulty communicating due to the differences between a South Texas, Aussie and Africaaner's accent. Brings to mind Churchill's comment about people divided by a common language.
Mike, a lot of what you say about Aussie's is true. And I'd add that they are good sports. One correction, based on my limited experience, I don't think Warren ever had to take a second shot.
He's a good mate. I hope we have the chance to share a camp again soon.
All in all, however, a lot of l loteipgtnsf bus

crsheltonMike,
Thank you for your list. Having worked in Sydney for a while, I must agree with you on most of it. However, if I may comment on one or two points:
6. I agree with this if the game is still alive and kicking, especially if it is big and bad and if it might be difficult to recover if it runs off.
2. Thanks for this- I will be helping to entertain a group of four Aussies near Hondo, Texas just after Thanksgiving and will lay in a supply of good cigars for the after-hunt story telling and relaxing.
1. Totally agree and I am looking forward to a fun outing with these blokes.

F*CK NO!!!! That stuff tastes like the water from the baby wading pool, all sort of chlorine and other assorted fluids. I wouldn't mind a Hansa, though. Seeing as you're buying.

lavacaTypical Aussies, we had a very nice conversation going and now we are in a row about beer. Gotta love 'um. Not that they would reject any beer, bear in mind. And they will all admit it. Beside the point.

Personally I have never had a bad beer in my life - and I have drunk some flat warm beers too and they were still good at the time!!

Agreed! When I was in Perth, the first day we went into a pub and I ordered a Fosters. The bartender looked at me and said "You must be a Yank. We don't serve shit beer here in Australia, that Fosters shit all goes to America. Here, try a real beer, a Twoohies New".

Tim FerrallAnd point #11 is, Aussies are charming blokes who can, wittingly or unwittingly, charm the knickers off your wife or daughter!

07 October 2012, 05:53
lavacaYet the fact remains, that while Texans and Aussies are perfectly willing to drink any beer in camp - in whatever quantities are available, that does not preclude a bloody row over which beer -- not currently available -- is better -- while continuing to enjoy the local swill provided. No, I don't think booking Texans and Aussies in the same camp is much of a problem. We are both pretty much of the same mindset.
07 October 2012, 06:17
Matt GrahamIndeed that is true lavaca... we always order extra beer when we have Texans coming to hunt!!

07 October 2012, 06:35
MJinesI think Aussies, Calgarians and Texans were actually triplets separated at birth.
