Geez, we have had a run of puff adders, boomslangs and a couple of red lipped heralds. The heralds are grumpy bastards and strike repeatedly but their venom will cause a little swelling and a headache. The puff adders loose their heads quickly if they are in the yard. The boomslangs usually take off.

I spent the best part of 2 days at Reno in a futile effort to convince a prospective client that the chances of running into snakes was a rarity. His concern took total preference over what his planned 21 day full bag safari was going to do for him.

Definitely afraid of snakes! I was lucky enough to see only two last year in 12 days. One dead on the highway and one 5-6 foot long snake at vic falls. Is it a good thing to show your kids that a defanged cobra is safe? What happens when a wild one comes along? Agree with Dave. In all of my safaris I have only seen one snake-a cobra, and that was one too many snakes for me.

Snake charmers in 3rd world countries often have their cobras defanged. ...snake owners in western world countries may just have the venom glands removed.
its actually three RB-blacks and a Tiger.

ahhh come on Rick!! IF you guys have a strong stomach. Kill 'em and they're the best fried chicken you'll ever eat. Here's a funny story. Had a 6'7" 380lb buddy riding with me one summer in a Luv p/u. Came across a two headed twisted red racer. Since they're good snakes. I stopped to shoo them off the hwy. They went under the trk. One went out in the grass and we never saw the other again. Went on to make a delivery, then miles down a gravel road @ 60mph. Frank had his arm out the window when I saw that other snakes head just above and behind his elbow in the mirror. I said: "hey Frank, bring your arm in" What the F for?" "just bring your damnd arm in!" I started shutting down knowing he was gonna jump in my lap and didn't want to wreck. "so now what?" "look in the mirror". Here he came nearly in my lap just as I knew he would. I stopped and the snake got out on the prairie and away it went. I sure respect them. More so depending on where and how close they are when I spot them. Nothing like picking something up and have one under it to wake you up. I stepped on a rattler Memorial Day '97. Turned out I'd stepped on it's head but didn't know that til later. When I saw it, it was under the heel of my boot. Never knew I could jump that far!! There's a lot of good snakes out there that do a whole lot of good. The only one's I kill are venomous types. We have bullsnakes here that are real good about keeping the rattlers away and eat lots of mice and rats, some rabbits too. Trouble is, they're colored very near alike the prairie rattlers. Hard to tell until we see the head or tail. Roll a bale of hay over and have one under it and it WILL startle you even when you fully expect it. We that know, don't just pick up a bale, we roll it toward ourselves to look under it to make sure. Over many yrs I've seen lots of 'em, but, only one while hunting. That was a 4" rattler in Oct during a chilly light rain during antelope season while walking back to the trk. Those tiny ones are more potent than the big ones but, it's the big one's that are more scary. George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!" if i was afraid of snakes, i wouldn't leave my house. and even then, i wouldn't be totally safe, as i killed 2 rattlesnakes inside the house last year( and i have NO idea how they got inside, as we leave the doors closed). we had a good year this year as the total kill was only 24( about average) around the house and barn. last year it was 85…. snakes don't scare me( and my wife is the real snake killer) but i do have a healthy respect for them. I don't mind eating them, just don't want to touch them or be "touched" by them.

The browns were Red Belly Blacks. Not one of our most venomous snakes. A fit health adult who does not panic has a good chance of surviving a bite by a red belly if they get a pressure bandange on. They tend to keep browns away. I can think of quicker, easier and way less dangerous ways to catch rabbits without a firearm.
