Suspected cases recently reported from Western Tanzania. A PH friend of mine got it late last year and seeing how he suffered i wouldn't wish it on anyone! 5 months later he is still less than 50% recovered. Chikungunya Virus Brief description Chikungunya virus 03-13-2006 > >Indian Ocean suffers from the Chikungunya virus > >According to the French Association of Tour Operators, CETO, the Chikungunya epidemic, which first started in the Reunion Island in >January, has begun to have a significant impact on reservations from French tourists to the island. CETO is expecting a drop in bookings of around 30-40%. > >The Chikungunya virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, has already infected as many as 180,000 people on Réunion Island. Jocelyne Lauret, CEO of La Réunion’s Office of Tourism (CTR), said that 12,000 overnights were >cancelled for the month of February, representing a loss of EUR500,000 in earnings for the island. The Seychelles has recorded 2,000 cases and Mauritius 15 as at early February. In >Mauritius, the regional authorities reacted immediately with an anti-mosquito spraying campaign. Dear friends I got Chikungunya 2 months ago when hunting in the CAR. Since the 12th january, I am permanently suffering from migrating arthralgias. Every joint is aching more and less, any hour, any day is different. As soon as I rest a bit, the very joints lock and it's hell to unlock them. I am now in the third month and seriously crippled. I am limping because suffering either from the feet, or the heels or the knees or all together. My wrists are swelled and using the mouse with the computer is a sheer torture. Imagine what' s a night, when awaked umpteen times by every acheful motion. When I don't work, I reluctantly eat and sleep no end. sleep-work-sleep-work-sleep-work...etc Imagine what's a meal as far as You are unsure that your acheful jaw-joints will accept to chew. Sure one has to be a dedicated hunter to accept to get such damned virus. No therapy is helping, not speaking curing. I didn't try morphinics and don't want to. Consequently, as nothing is indicating any recovery (count on months or...years)I do my best to keep my moral high, joking as often as possible, shuting up rather than being rude when suffering. And little activity to slow down the wasting of muscles and to prevent joints from locking. and the great AR forum to have fun... I will be proposing several homemade cures to Jean Bernard when he comes to Rambouillet at the end of the month. Under the Humour thread there is a good approach for St. Patrick's Day which may work on Jean Bernard. Otherwise, my Margaritas have always provided temporary relief. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Jean - that is terrible, I am sorry to hear this. Keep the faith that you will beat it and your quality of life will return to normal. Having never heard of "Chikungunya", I did a quick google. The name comes from the Swahili for "that which bends up", which is a reference to the positions that victims take to relieve the joint pain.

JB, you are given a terrible description .I join in hoping that time will allow your body to overcome. We dont know anything about this new virus,so we must hope. Do simple antiinflammatories like Motrin,Naprosyn give you any relief or mobility?

Wow, what a terrible condition. I have never heard of this virus until today. Mr. de Runz I would suggest you see a pain specialist and/or Rheumatologist if you have not already done so. Very sorry to hear about your condition.

JB, I will send a PM tomorrow. There is a new systemic antiviral medicine that should enter the US market later this year. A production facility has been completed in Portugal. One of the lead researchers is Dr. Kenney DeMeier, from Holland. Take the pain medicine. When you take it for real pain such as you have, the potential for addiction is very low. By controlling the pain now, you will decrease the proccess of amplification of the pain pathways. I will send you all the information I can get from our National Institutes of Health, and our Center for Disease Control. lawndart PS My mother's side of the family came from Alsace-Lorraine. Sorry to hear you got tangled with this one. I've managed to keep employed by the death and pestilence by bugs for more than thirty years, and this one is a bad one, but only one of them. We had a saying when we would be doing investigations of something we had never seen, There are more and worse out there, some that come and go, and some we do not know! The most dangerous animals you deal with on safari are going to be mosquitoes, ticks and their ilk. Permanone may be a better investment than a big bore, but a lot less interesting. Work hard and be nice, you never have enough time or friends.

Lawndart, I bet it's Diemer. I live in the very center of the Diemer family's origin, just next door, great people and almost close friends. You ought to be proud of them. J B de Runz Be careful when blindly following the masses ... generally the "m" is silent

You all, Thanks a lot for your friendly compassion. In fact no medication is really efficient. I have to grit my teeth and wait. The best painkiller is what Wink is suggesting, alcohol. I am no drunk but with 2 or 3 beers my spirit is going high and my pains low. I regreet to have aired this minor temporary trouble, it's a viral one and will cure. Convey Your wishes to deserving hard hit people. My moral and my humour are in great form, life is great................even for a */#^@ frog. J.B. Damn, I'm sorry to hear about your problem. I did a google search on it. Interesting. No cure but, good thing, seldom fatal. It sounds similar to rheumatoid arthritis, which is also caused by a virus. I've had RA since 1996. I understand the different joint pain every day. Every time I wake up, I roll over and think, "What in hell is gonna hurt today!" I tried several prescription medicines, didn't work. I tried several home remedies, I did find one that works pretty good. An old retired Docter friend of mine told me to take Niacidamide and Glucosomine. Both are natural and require no prescription. I've experimented several times by taking them for 2-3 months then not taking them for 2-3 months. They seem to work for me. It's worth a try. By the way, I agree on the alcohol treatment. Taken internally it works for me! I enjoyed your pics and stories from countries I'm sure I will never be able to hunt in. Good Luck:
