If you are headed to Africa this season:

1. Schedule a dental check up a month or two before you go.

2. Estate planning - get a Last Will and Testament.

3. Get started on your vaccinations.

4. Get your ass off the couch and go for a walk.

5. Check on your health insurance and see what it covers if sick/injured while overseas.

6. Are you going to need supplemental insurance and Medjet evacuation insurance? See the next to the last post on the Tips & Packing List Topic.

7. Is your Passport good for 6 months after your return? Do you have at least 4 blank visa pages in your Passport?

8. Get your ass off the couch and go for a walk.

9. If you shoot factory ammo, have plenty on hand. Don't wait until the last 2 weeks before your trip to buy ammo.

10. Tell your wife you love her (Hey, it can't hurt). Wink

11. Get your firearms registered with US Customs on Form 4457.

12. Get your ass off the couch and go for a walk.

13. Get in some shooting practice (off sticks, etc).

14. Practice with your camera so your trophy shots will look great.

15. Save some extra money so you can shoot one extra animal.

16. Get your ass off the couch and go for a walk in your hunting boots.

Regards,

Terry

P.S.

I know I have covered some of this in recent posts. Just trying to keep everyone on their toes. Big Grin

Thanks Terry, However you failed to mention that people need to get exercise by walking! (PS. Take the dog/wife with you.)

Terry,

Great list! But I will have to skip the sticks part. If I cannot hit it without sticks, I will pass. In fact, I am a shooting sticks retard - they mess up my shooting completely. I just cannot seem to figure them out and I am far better off to shoot offhand than to use sticks. In fact I put the following clause in the safari contract: "PH represents and warrants that there will be no shooting sticks within the concession or otherwise accessible to the safari team for the duration of the hunt."

Dan,

Is that really good drafting...after all it is really only a promise of a future fact not a current fact....isn't it reallly just a warranty?

Inquiring minds want to know....

1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.

Remember to load up your handloaded ammo requirements at least starting at midnight the night before your 9 am flight the tommorrow morning.

Works for me.

Dan,

I understand that part of the drafting but is it technically correct to "represent" a future fact...

Four miles every day! Got my pace up to four mph yesterday.

Only been at it 12 days and have lost 17 pounds and gotten my legs and feet to stop hurting during the walks. Got 23 more pounds to go before I get down to 'fighting" weight.

If I can do it, ANYBODY can do it! Smiler

Mike,

A representation is different than a promise. If the representation turns out to be false, then the basis for the contract does not exist and recission is the appropriate remedy. If a promise is not fulfilled, and the promise was not material to the contract, then there is no material breach and the buyer must still perform his end of the contract. If the promise is material, then there is breach and the buyer may cancel and seek damages.

As for representing a future fact, the safari co. would be representing the condition that it will put the concession in by the beginning of the hunt. By making it a representation, the buyer is in a stronger position than if it were a promise, as explained above.

You teach some law classes don't you? You might want to print this thread in case the issue comes up in class.

That is amazing progress! Did you have to cut your food intake back much, or are these results simply from exercise?

Cut food intake! Cut, slash, diminish, curtail -- whatever verb you want to use. Before last Monday-week, I was on the proverbial "see food" diet (if I could see it, I would eat it).

Now I eat a bowl of oatmeal in the morning; a protein shake (Myoplex, low carb) for lunch; an apple for a mid-afternoon snack; and a chicken ceasar salad or stir fried chicken for supper.

Surprisingly, I'm not ever hungry, but I so miss the "bad" stuff. To mitigate this, I have one "free day" a week that let's me satisfy the cravings.

I've been on this program when training for a hunt before, and it works for me.

GAHUNTER, Congrats! That is impressive. Sounds like the Zone to me, which is a winner. Are you hardcore and do the exercise before breakfast?

I'm giving myself 15 weeks to shuck 25 lbs. I follow the Zone a bit, but not to the letter. I sure like the free day!

Cheers,
Canuck

Great list, Terry and point on about the exercise! I walk two plus miles a day and still find my a$$ dragging the first couple of days on safari. I'm sure jet lag may have something to do with it. Are you still recommending the jet lag pills you used a year or so ago?

I`m on to it even if I don`t get to hunt Africa before 2006, at best...
Some days ago I walked and ran just a few km, and my legs went "stiff" for a couple of days.. And I`ve normally always been in good shape. That got me thinking. Get in shape now! BTW I quit smoking two weeks ago and I`m feeling much better. Have more energy and will have more money for hunting.
Today my girlfriend and I walked 5-6 km. Great trip through beautiful scenery. I also discovered some new places to hunt roedeer... Interesting places with a lot of tracks...

Damn, you guy sure know how to take all the fun out of Safari and turn it into a survival course from hell!! If I ran 4 miles a day I couldn't go on Safari, my feet wouldn't take it! beer

On the serious side, If you are going to Tanzania then for Petes sake get your 4 passport photograhs, a copy of your passport, Make, model, caliber and serial number of your firearms to your booking agent with your deposit, not a month or two before you are scheduled to leave on safari, thats a good way to end up not going.....
