Which locking system is preferable on a tuffpak - the key system or the TSA approved system? BTW - what is the TSA approved system? | ||

Dogcat You are not supposed to have a TSA approved lock on it, "I BELIEVE" because then anyone with a TSA approved key can get into your case. Subsailor74 came up with a genius idea on how to secure it. On the inside collar where the lid is, he put a piece of flat metal and riveted it into place on the bottom part, made an appropriate sized hole through the lid so the metal can stick out and then drilled a hole in the metal so he can use a lock on it. I have done this on both of mine and bought a master lock that has the hasp shielded so even bolt cutters would have a hard time getting it open. | |||

Rick - thanks, but I copied the idea from another hunter here on AR. You are correct about not having a TSA lock on a case with guns - that does not meet requirements. | |||

I thought it was a great idea, thanks to Mike and to Dave, where I got it from. I bought a "take-down" Tuffpak at DSC and it has already been modified to use the additional lock. | |||

Here's my modification. I can use either the TuffPac lock or mine or both, this way.   JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous. | |||

I think they could still get into the case but they are going to need a saw of some kind and some time. | |||

There is no real need to "modify" the TuffPak. Twenty years of travel with mine without incident and have never heard a DOCUMENTED case of a problem with the installed locking device. As stated, the TSA locking option is NOT approved for firearms. TuffPak made the TSA lock an option because the cases are also used for transport of items which are not firearms. In fact, the case was originally designed to transport professional camera tripods for the movie industry. Such items would require the TSA lock. If one is transporting a firearm only you the owner is supposed to be able to open it. I ask for a TSA agent and tell him I am transporting a firearm. I unlock and he removes the bag and checks it out repacks it and I lock it up and he puts a seal on it. Mike | |||

It is illegal to have a TSA type lock on a gun case. You must be the only person with access to the case containing your firearms. TSA WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CHECK IN YOUR GUNS WITH A CASE FITTED WITH A TSA LOCK. That is if the agent knows the law.  | |||

Yes, and still yet, going through Chicago last time, when the TSA xrayed my bag, I told him that it was not a TSA approved lock as per law and he said "we don't care about that". I think it is up to the individual TSA agent. They think they can make their own rules. | |||
