I joked with Ian Gibson in Reno when we were writing up my deposit for my next trip:

When he asked what I wanted to hunt, I said, "I think this time, I'll just take 50 baboons."

On a serious note, I really enjoyed shooting those things! If, you were on the African equivilant of a Prairie Dog shoot, and say, doing some government culling of baboons all day, what would you take?

Figure the shots would get further and further as you chased them around, so you'd want something flat shooting with enough energy to make a clean humane kill, but still be toleratable after a long day.

I'm thinking a .270 might be good. What would YOU take?

I'd seriously consider a varmit rifle in the .223 or 22:250 class.

Not an expert but think a 22-250 with partitions loaded would do just fine? I think you would need something that you could shoot long distance with. They seem to feel safe once they are 300 yards away!

Ground squirrels with a 22LR is more my cup of tea, but to each their own. I think a 257 Weatherby with 6.5x20X scope would cover everything, and a good spotting scope for looking over the kopje's after they scatter.

Give me a .25-06 or the .257 Weatherby with a 87gr or 100gr load. That should do the trick!

Kind regards
Carl

Heck, I am with Dogcat, I've shot more with a .375 than any other cartridge! Might as well stick with what works...

How about a .243 loaded with a screaming hot 85 gr. TSX? The .243 is one of my favorite varmint rounds.

To get closer use a leaf camouflage dress.

And when you get tired of the big ones try the smaller monkeys with a .22, great fun that to.

Enigma

There is a great book called "Eating Apes" that goes into quite a lot of detail re: the "bush meat" trade. With so much attention given to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, it's worth reflecting on its origins. More importantly, as the author reminds us, is to consider how it works. HIV/AIDS appears to be a recent evolutionary virus quirk. It adapts and evolves with amazing speed. The roots of it remain in the African forest and a new strain can emerge at any time. The best means of transmission from ape or monkey to human is through blood. It is estimated that in West Africa about 2% of the new HIV2 cases result from monkey/human blood contact. In short, I would not think eating a baboon is a very good idea.

Yes, .375 is what we have mostly used and when you consider how big the males can get, you want something a lot more potent than a varmint rifle. Also, once they have been shot at a bit, the ranges can get very, very long.

Mind you, we've 'vamint hunted' rock rabbits with the .375, too!!!

Maybe it's just me, but shooting a monkey would seem a little too much like shooting a hairy little human.

Yes, I shot a good deal of monkeys as a kid (even built one's skeleton up for a project,).
After a while its become a bit distaseful, like just killing for the sake of killing and hearing the rifle go bang. Shooting primates is no longer my deal. I guess the 'novelty' wore off.

I would not shoot anything much lighter than a 270. The bigger males can be nasty when wounded, keep in mind that a baboon has teeth in the same class as a leopard. They can and will give you a nasty bite.
Any gun shooting +/- 130 gr(or heavier) at around 2700 ft/sec or faster. Baboons can be difficult to get when shot at often, take one whenever you get the opertunity.

The best rifle in my vault for Baboon is a little Mannlicher Shoenauer MCA 1962 Rifle, with a good 3-9X40MM scope, chambered for 243 Win! I use a load of H-4831 (.46.0 grs),CCI LR primer, behind a Hornady 100 gr SP @ 3000 fps. This load, in my rifle, will shoot .5 MOA and drop a 250 lb muledeer on his belly, never to rise again @ 350 yds, with a lung shot. A baboon doesn't have a chance of biteing anyone after he takes one of these. The only problem is, if you want a full body mount, you will have to place the exit side to the wall, because this load will blow a hole the size of your head in th off side! thumb
