Farmer 'tests' tiger by the tail in MP's Khargone, loses life

MP: Farmer loses life after he poked tiger with stick in Khargone

KHARGONE: Taking a tiger by the tail has cost a farmer his life in a village in MP's Khargone district.
Santosh, 35, tapped a wandering tiger's tail with a stick to "see how it would react", forest officers said on Thursday. The tiger took a swipe at him, cutting a deep gash in the back of his neck. Santosh died in a hospital on Thursday. The tiger is yet to be located. The forest department has urged villagers not to go into the forest or disturb the tiger.
Foresters say it has strayed from Yawal Wildlife Sanctuary in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra to Chiriya forest range of Khargone district, a distance of around 100km.
"It entered the Amba Dochar area from Yawal Sanctuary and was resting after a big hunt. His presence attracted a crowd of villagers, who began harassing the tiger," Bhikangaon SDO (forest) Dinesh Waskel said.

Desperate to get away from the crowd, the tiger attacked a forest beat guard, who managed to escape by warding it off with a stick and then clambering up a tree, Waskel told TOI. The tiger ran for around 10-12 km towards the north-east, double-backed on its tracks, and spent about 4 hours in a small field in Khushiyala village. It was then Santosh of Gwala village decided to "test the tiger", say forest officials.
Santosh, who had followed it around with several other villagers for hours, poked its tail with a stick just when the tiger had hunkered down for a bit of rest, say foresters. The tiger sprang up and clawed him. Santosh staggered back, clutching the back of his neck.
A video of the immediate aftermath shows Santosh walking down a farm embankment, trying to stem the blood from his neck, as other villagers holler for a vehicle. He was taken to a government hospital in Pandhana, around 40km away.
In another video, Santosh is seen sitting bandaged in his hospital bed and saying that the tiger turned on him because police chased it from one corner of the field. "I am a heavy man, so I threw it down otherwise he would have dragged me away," he is heard telling local mediapersons. He says he's feeling fine in the video. However, his condition deteriorated suddenly and he died on Thursday. The forest department issued a statement that Santosh had tapped the tiger's tail with a stick.
Waskel said an ex gratia of Rs 8 lakh will be given to his family, as per norms. Efforts to send the tiger back have failed, he said. Forest officials lost track of the big cat on Thursday. "On Thursday afternoon, we found its pugmarks near the MP-Maharashtra border which indicates that the big cat has moved towards Yawal wildlife sanctuary," Waskel said.
Tiger pugmarks were seen in the same area a year ago. Experts from Indore-based Ralamandal sanctuary have been summoned to track it down.
