I have always thought about hunting buffalo. Maybe becaus my first safafi film there was a guy hunting a buff in close quarters, and beeing charged, only shooting it 10 yards away. A huge animal..

I see some of the hunts put togheter, and they usually consist of 7-10 different animals over 14 days.

Im wondering is it possible to trade the other animals for 3-4 buffalos? Or do you recomend to hunt the normal "set up"?

When it came time for me to hunt Africa, I didn't really care about the plains game, I was primarily interested in Buffalo. I booked a 10 day hunt in the Zambezi Valley with Swainson's, secured 2 buffalo licenses, and didn't worry about any other game. When the hunt took place, I took my two buffalo, along with 2 impala (targets of opportunity) and 1 nice kudu (which I worked a few days for).

The outfitter only has so many animals on license in a given area, and they can legitimately charge more for DG hunts than for PG, so it is in their best interest to keep the DG spread around. I think that there are probably lots of hunters that would go just for buff, if there wasn't some mechanism in place that would self-regulate what hunters took. The way Swainson's handled it was that the trophy fee for the first buffalo was the usual rate, but the second one was almost twice the price. I didn't have enough guts to ask what a third one would cost!

It was worth it for me to pony up the higher rate for 2 buffalo, but probably wouldn't be for lots of folks. For the price of that second buffalo, I could have taken 5-7 various affordable plains game. I do regret not adding a tuskless cow ele, but I don't regret not taking a full bag of plains game.

Your best source for multiple buffalo hunts is probably the Selous in Tanzania. I think you take 2 buffalo in 10 days and 3 buffalo in 16 days.

The package hunts that you are seeing are usually plainsgame hunts in South Africa. There you find a lot of packages that include a group of animals.

No, it is not possible to exchange 5 or 6 animals in a South African package for even one Buff in SA.

Buffalo hunts are usually done as packages as well, but only contain one or sometimes two Buffalo. The 2 Buff packages are almost always in Tanzania.(but as formerflyer proved, there are some exceptions)

Terry is right, the Selous is a very affordable way to shoot 2 Buffalo for $12,000 - $14,000 (all inclusive except airfare to Africa). There are more expensive Buff hunts going into the $25,000 range, these are usually longer hunts with more animals available on license or hunts in exceptional trophy quality areas.

Is there one place that is known for having the best buff trophy quality, regardless of the price? If so, where?

I think the concessions bordering Tarangire National Park in northern Tanzania produce some monster buffalo. However, the weather, water and food situation can determine whether the buffalo stay in the park or move to the hunting concessions, so timing is critical.

Adam Clements Safari Trackers has two concessions bordering Tarangire. Luke Samaras has a concession which has a small border with Tarangire. There is also a small concession on the west side of the park, but I would consider it marginal just because it is so small (Sheni Abdallah has that concession).
