What is the penalty for poaching in Botswana? By poaching I mean to include hunting while the season is closed. This thread made me wonder: https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6321043/m/639101273

When i visited Botswana three years ago, we came across an elephant skeleton in the bush on our game walk. Our guide, a local black guy told that the elephant had been killed by poachers some years before and that they got caught red-handed. He told us that the guys got 15 years of imprisonment for the elephant kill. Don't know if it was true or not.

More from ws(bs).com: "Is he hunting there on a CHA permit? Or using his tribal connection?" Is there such a permit? I guess it does not matter given how "connected" Carmello is with wealthy big game hunters, "many" invitations from outfitters, AND has tribal connections!!! I am in awe!!!

Yes, that is my understanding. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

So, which part of Carmelo do you think will end upp in the trophy room at the Botswana Imperial Guard's officers' mess? Regards, Martin ----------------------- A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition. - R. Kipling

I've talked to quite a few BDF soldiers and officers, and they definately seemed to take their job very seriously. And it didn't seem like they would hesitate to use deadly force if needed. More so than nabouring countrys troops it seemed. We were warned by locals not to screw around with them. If someone was hunting illegally in Botswana, I sincerly hope the BDF caught them red handed.

I went on a game viewing safari between hunts in Zimbabwe in 2002. The track we drove on was right on the border with Botswana, a few metres to the West was Botswana (I had a just to prove I was there! (I have been there before anyway) ). To the point we were told the Botswanians are very strict about poaching and very tough on them as well. This spot was a magic area with large herds of elephant, buffalo, wonderful kudu. A small strip was game viewing only (along the border) the rest a hunting concession owned by a "madame comrade general's wife" ie bitch crony). I also saw a documentary about poaching in Botswana as well. Botswana is not a poor country, it is quite wealthy with huge mineral reserves, considerable income from cattle and also tourism. And a small population. The people are generally well dressed and drive newish motor vehicles (from my recollection). The anti-poaching patrols on the Northern borders were well equipped with modern gunship helicopters and land vehicles. They entered into firefights with poachers with the intention of killing or apprehending the poachers.

Is a CHA, a community or citizens hunting area? If so, is the American a citizen or resident of Botswana (in his spare time)? Maybe the "tribal connection" is the village (idiot) poacher?

While watching a special on Botswanas ele's on ANIMAL PLANET, they interviewed a commander of the BDF. When questioned about poachers, he just said they "terminated" them, and the interview moved on quickly to other subjects. The entire force seemed quite determined and efficient.
