FWIW, there's an area in KZN I've been hunting on and off for about 25 years that although fenced, is soooooooo damn big you'd never know it that has the best nyala population I've ever seen.

I was there last year and although the place has a lot of impala it has even more nyala!

Plenty of places in Zim and Moz have good un's as well though.

We, have a spot in Limpopo where there is only cattle fences hence free range nyala. I had a look at your link and to find a monster like that is highly unlikely no matter where you go on a short hunt meaning 7-14 days unless you have very good luck on your side.

But I think for a good success rate I doubt you will beat South Africa.

Its a provincial revserve. My friend worked there and regularly culled nyala, they are thick on those Mkuze floodplains.

Natal if you want to be selective. That's native ground to the Nyala: Kwa-zulu Natal. There are conservancies there so large you won't cover the ground in summer. Many ways to hunt them but spot and stalk is the most sporting and a challenge in the hill country. My ultimate hunting career high would be to break the current world record:

I've only hunted Nyala once, in Limpopo with Spear, but they strike me as an animal that high fences play little role in affecting the quality of the hunt. I regard them as very similar to whitetails in that regard. I think if a property is large enough, being very arbitrary let's say around 10,000 acres, I doubt anyone would have any issues with fences when hunting Nyala. There are other animals that I would not say that about, but these little buggers seem to have small home ranges and stick to thick cover, so who cares if the fence is 1/2 mile away if you never see it?

If I were to shoot another one (most likely won't, as there are many other things I haven't hunted or ones I want to hunt again and again) I'd do the hunt in KZN, where I'm told the best trophies generally come from, as well as the largest populations.

Hi Guys,

First time posting a pic, so hope it works. Took this pic of a nice nyala bull on my ranch on the 13th Jan 2010. Stalked to about 40 yards and shot him with my camera. Guestimate him about 27 inch. They get pretty big here in the Eastern Cape but you have to hunt hard to find one of 27"plus. Had a client Shoot a beautiful, very old 30,5" inch during 2008. Remember its not all about the inches, These are gorgeous gracious animals and a mature 25" nyala bull taken after a good hunt will give you wonderfull memories for the rest of your life.

The classical areas to hunt Nyala are Kwa Zulu Natal and Mozambique. If possible I would prefer to hunt them in native range and not where they have been introduced into non-native ranges. I would also prefer to hunt them on low fenced ranches or gov't lands. But that is just me. I would like to hunt them in Moz.

Bill/Oregon; we took the tenderloins or "fillits" as my friends in RSA call them and grilled them over hot coals. The only thing added was lime, pepper and garlic powder. They were outstanding! Last June we took the same cuts and Sabina Troskie prepared them and Chris cooked them in a hot pan (for a better word) over hot coals. Again they were great. Bontebok is the best I have ever tasted but Nyala is an epicures delight.

Aspen Hill Adventures

Nyala are my favorite spiral horn and are real special in my book. They have beautiful coats whether male or female and are just gorgeous. They are non migratory, fencing means nothing, these animals maintain a core territory.

One thing to look for is proper horn shape, that with a 'bell' and not to let a PH have you shoot an immature animal or a cull type. They are far too expensive to take home a less than great trophy.

Garry Kelly has bought the majority of the Mkuze Game Reserve quota in RSA for several years. He averaged 29.5" in '09 which is spectacular. The reserve is large but is fenced. This area however is the natural habitat for the nyala unlike much of the nyala in RSA that have been transplanted to areas where they never naturally occurred.

Bahati Safaris on the Zambesi Delta offers completely wild and unfenced nyala hunting with an average of about 28". Check my recent report on my hunt with Bahati.

Hi Chris,

Got a hunter from Austria who has been over 3 times to hunt a nyala like that with no luck. Pesonally i think its a female with horns. Have one on one of my concessions, but we never see it when a willing hunter wants it. Murphy's law again!

I can vouch for that!

I've been here twice, last time in September 2009. The Nyala I took was over 30" and BEAUTIFUL!

We hunted them hard and saw many many good shooters before I took the one I have coming home to a special trophy spot in my home.

Great concessions for fantastic game. I've hunted with them in both South Africa and Moz. I like them enough to already have signed up for a 2012 retirement trip that I'll take my nephew along for his first exposure to Africa.

May as spoil him right the first time!
