Dave FulsonHelp! Can someone help age my lion?
Just returned from Tanzania on a 21 day safari.
I got my lion on day 18, but I'm having trouble aging him.

Any ideas?

But, just wipe the milk from his lips, open his jaws and check his teeth....or you could just ask his mom, she watched the whole thing...

SaeedI have actually seen photos of lion cub s just like this one, together with lionesses, shot in Tanzania by local hunters.
In the same photos, I have also seen a bunch of sable, including young ones and cows.
So if Tanzania is going to make a statement, they might wish to keep an eye on local hunters who shoot animals they are not supposed to.

KPeteA beautiful trophy, Dave. Tad small for a rug, though. Perhaps if you were to take three more you could have them made into placemats.

Was that enough gun for the monster. I only see the one hole in the side. I can't see the entry wound that stopped the charge.

It appears he shot it with his "BIG BAD DOUBLE RIFLE"! Dave, if it was 20 lbs heavier, you probably would have needed to run it over with the truck!

smarterthanuApparently you missed the memo Dave. Shooting baby lions has now been classified on the same level as screwing fatgirls and riding mopeds. Its a lot of fun until your friends catch you doing it.

sandyhunterFunny stuff, Dave (Do you feel it chose how it was going to die, or was it too young to make such a choice?), but I bet the antis try to treat it as a real photo and use it against us. After all, they're not particularly concerned about the truth.

fairgameWhat about forming a Cub Club and we could include baby seals and all sorts of other juveniles. We could have a club class where as you beat your trophy to death with a piece of timber.

CrazyhorseconsultingThat is probably the best thing someone could have done at this time after all the emotion and testosterone that was flowing so freely in the recent past.
We all need to pray to the God we worship that PETA and some of the other goofballs don't try to capitalize on this.
Thanks for posting that Dave and Thanks to everyone else for all their in the spirit comments.

Dave FulsonHeres the story. We were tracking a herd of dik-dik in heavy cover, when right in front of us we heard a high pitched scream mixed with the savage mewing of the unseen killer taking down a sub adult female dik-dik. Realizing this might be my chance, I dove headlong through the bush, my Searcy.470 ready . The bush was thick, and the dust cloud from the still struggling dik-dik was chocking me, yet out of the whirlwind of fear and exhilaration the great beast loomed up in front of me and my moment of truth was at hand ! Seeing a semi black nose staring at me from a matter of mere feet, instinct took over, and 500 grains of Hornady's best sped true and the lion was at long last mine. The mane was more like the Tsavo variety, and the cat had obviously been having a hard time bringing down buffalo ( it might have been wounded in previous battles with dagga boys ?) as it weighed less than some other lions I have seen- but I hunt more for the experience than for the trophy ! What did my trophy score you ask? Unfortunately
I was unable to measure the skull due to a cruel twist of fate. The camp manager has a 8 month old Russell Terrier who was wandering around the skinning shed one afternoon and accidentally stepped on the bleached skull with a back foot and it broke into a hundred pieces. I can now only dream of what color SCI medal I might have had in my trophy case.....
EDITORS NOTE: ATTENTION PETA
The post above is a combination of semi-skilled photo shop and old fashioned Texas brand smart ass in an attempt to bring just a wee bit of humor to a thread that might have got just a wee bit over the edge . No lion were harmed in the making of this post, and any unnecessary posting or discussion by PETA members online or in private will be tolerated by the author.
Such actions will only verify how simple and easily fooled your ilk are and will result in good chuckles , at your expense, by my brothers and sisters here at AR.

raamwWas the cat able to open it eyes before you shot, it may have though you where its mother when you stalked up to it, generally if they try to suckle on the gun barrel its indicative of a very immature cat, maybe even a baby.

D. NelsonDave;
Your lion is only rivaled by your suni.

Best regards, D. Nelson
quote:
Showdown with the Rogue Suni of Coutada 11 !
The Villagers thought I was sent down from heaven
It out witted Mark, Richard and Craigh
Please send us a hunter, the village chief begged
The marauder had shut down camps, roads and farms
When its spore was seen, it was met with alarm
Life came to a stand still, the out look was grim!
Until Boddington said, “It’s time to call him!”
Bell had his eles, Hunter his lions
With tigers the man known as Corbett did fine
But for challenge and toughness these species feel puny
A new man’s arrived, they call him “Boss Suni”
A legend from Texas had made the long flight
And now the rogue suni was in for a fight
I’m in Mozambique to rid them of scourge
When the showdown takes place only one will emerge
I’ll need the camp shotgun, and only one shell
For I’ll get just one chance deep in that green hell
I’ll hunt him far different than Mark with the truck
I’ll kill him with skill, where Mark’s hoped for luck!
The bull was a lower, a creature gone bad!
He gave me the most thrilling hunt I have had
I followed my nose and tracked him by sight
I built small machans and sat up all night
But try as I might, he stayed just ahead
A mousey brown shadow, I followed – he led!
Then an over-turned leaf, a bent blade of grass
I was closing the gap, I was catching his ass
It happened like lightening, the day that we met
He reared up before me, I’ll never forget
He came in a rush with a deep savage bleat
But when the dust settled, he was dead at my feet
As I gazed at my foe a sound came behind me
And there was Mark Haldane, his ass safe in a high tree
He climbed to the ground, his face white as plasma
“You’re the Suni God ____, yes truly the master!
He recovered his wits with a slug from a flask
“You’re the only one here, that was up to that task”
A compliment taken, and probably due me
You can hunt without fear Mark, I’ve killed the Rogue Suni!!!!
